    Skimmer advice?

I have a Turboflotor by Aqua Medic and really love it. Mine originally came with the older Rio 2100 pump, but I have since upgraded to the Ocean Runner pump that they now sell with it and it is wonderful. This thing really pulls the gunk out of the water, and it quite easy to use. Although I...

    Refugium flow plumbing.

What you want to do to prevent water from siphoning back through your return line if your pump stops is this: Drill a small (maybe 1/4") hole in the return pipe, just below the surface of the water. This way when the pump goes out, water will only flow back to the sump until the anti-siphon...

    info on powder brown tang

Fenner's "The Concientious Marine Aquarist' states that although these two fish are similar, the white cheeked tang is MUCH hardier than the powder brown tang. I would think that a 90 gallon tank would be on the small side for a large tang such as these. I would consider it a temporary home...

    Coraline overgrowth

Funny, I have the most coralline algae on my glass where the water flow is the greatest. Specifically where I have it directed toward the front glass of the tank. Is this not normal????? Anyway, I have heard good things about the Tuxedo urchin, also. I plan on getting one. -Christine

whats your input on AQUACULTURED LIVEROCK ??

Since I got a substantial amount of rock, I got some very LARGE pieces (40+ lbs per rock for the base rocks). I did get some mantis (I believe three), mostly because these rocks were so large that they could hide pretty far in there. I have identified these guys and they are small smashers...

whats your input on AQUACULTURED LIVEROCK ??

Hands down Florida Aquacultured. I have 250 lbs of it. The stuff at the LFS around here cost 5x what I paid for my FL LR, and has no visible anything. My rock is the showcase of my tank. I wouldn't even consider anything else. Plus I really love the aquacultured idea of it.:) -Christine

    Sumps, overflows and pvc

Go ahead and use the pvc primer and glue. They are fine when they are dry. You want the ball valve to be on the return line. Mine is about a foot above the pump outlet. Many people have good results by placing a tee at that point and directing a smaller amount of water back to the sump...

Best Skimmer for a 140gallon tank?

Jeffs Exotic sells a EuroReef knock-off they call the Southbay skimmer. There is a local coral propagator that has one of these that he swears by. I've seen his set up and was impressed.

    Your welcome! :D

    Turboflotor 1000

You need to either plumb in the overflow from your tank (as their less than ideal instructions indicate), or plumb in a powerhead or pump from inside your sump to provide water to the unit. You dont need an air pump. The pump that it comes with the skimmer (Rio 2100 or Oceanrunner 2700) then...

    many bugs in my tank

Amphipods (very small) and cocopods (super-small). Natural and good, usually come on live rock. They are a good live food source for many fish. I have trillions! -Christine

    Heniochus in a Reef Tank

All of the online suppliers that I have found only offer the H. acuminatus, if they even go so far as to name the species. I have been looking for a source for the schooling bannerfish, H. diphreutes, as well. Anyone know of one?? Thanks, -Christine

    1 or 2 pumps?

I have one pump with three overflows, with great results. If one pump is suffiecient, go with that. Using a ball valve to trim back a pump is clearly harder on the pump than having it function unobstructed. You got a nice pump, use it to its best potential. I have a similar set-up (125g...

    Refractometer Decision

I have the one from North Coast Marine. I like it alot and recommend it. From what I have read, you want the type that does not require a screwdriver to adjust. This one is sturdy and easy to use, with a nice case. -Christine
