what are your thoughts on Caribbean Live Rock

Here is some of my FL aquacultured rock that was flown to me on my local airline (Canada may not be a problem, I am in Minnesota). I got it for 2.50/ lb, plus shipping, which equaled about 4.50/ lb total. Yes, I did not get to pick it out, but I think I got some nice stuff. By the way, This...

High Phosphate levels - I tried everything!

I believe that dripping kalkwasser as an additive/ with topoff water will help precipitate phosphorus out of the water in a way that your skimmer could remove it. Check out this article about phosphorus: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...t2002/chem.htm Good Luck, -Christine

Need your help raising my Mandarin Dragonet

There have been alot of threads here about the care and feeding of mandarins. I would recommend doing a forum search at this site for 'mandarin' and going through some other threads. You will get much more information in a much shorter time frame that way. You will also get to see about other...

i am confused about how strong my powerghead should be

I have bought alot of equipment on ----, with absolutely no problems. I have bought five Maxi-Jets and one overflow box from a seller called ebaeseller. I can recommend this guy, I have ordered from him twice now, including within the last month. I do not know about other sellers, but this...

Ode to my old SWF pals

Hi Oceanjumper! :) You were really helpful to me back when I was setting up my tank in November, last year. Thank you! I have it up and running now and I am VERY happy with how it is set up. It is light years beyond what the LFS guys were recommending. Mine is similar to yours in that I have...

    RO/DI unit

Many hobbiests here and elsewhere are very happy with the cost, quality and multiple functions (aquarium, drinking water, ice maker, etc.) of the systems made and sold by airwaterice.com. Moderator Beth just set up a system to do all of the above quite recently. They have great ---- auctions...

    Refugium/ sump/ overflow help confusion

It gets easier to understand and DIY as you investigate further. Do some searches here to find other members set-ups. I have two overflows on my 125 g tank. They are Marineland Tidepool SOS brand. I like them, very reliable. Don't make your own overflows and don't get a cheap one. This is...

    New Sump - Noise

Try moving your discharge hose from your overflow around in the sump. Move it to a position and leave it there for a while to equalize the pressure and see if that position helps with the noisy overflow problem. Some people have better luck with the discharge being right at the water level...

any suggestions on type of refractomter or hydrometer?

I agree. I wasted money on two hydrometers before I got a refractometer. I got mine from North Coast Marine, check out their 'specials' page. It is a great little tool, at a great price. I believe they sell the exact same one on ---- auctions as well. This is a popular model, so I know its...

ultra float switch( suction cup does not suck !

I avoided using the suction cups on my float switch. Instead, I used an idea that I read here: I took a 'clip on the edge of the tank' style maxi-jet powerhead hanger, and fastened the float switch to it using plastic cable ties (zip ties). This is a super easy modification, is not permanemt...

    Question on Pistol shrimp behavior

I just drop some food at the 'entrance' to thier cave. They come out to get it eventually. With time mine have come to expect thier food to be dropped there and will come out to get it almost right away. They dont see very well, but they smell it. They kind of grope around blindly to find...

    PVC Spring Check Valve

A spring check valve will cause significant back pressure on your return pump. For many reasons, there are much, much better ways to go, such as an anti-siphon hole. Good Luck, -Christine

    Cleaning sugar sand?

Maybe time to change the bulbs?? I know that the light quality decreases exponentially over time. Just my experience with plants and fungal cultures talking here (former plant pathologist). Perhaps the spectrum is slowly shifting as the bulbs age, and your good aquarium stuff is adapting...

    Skimmer Scum...

Sorry! You should NOT feed skimmer waste to any plants!! The salt content will kill them. No, I have not tried this, but I have a BS degree in Horticulture and Plant Pathology and am quite sure that this would be the result. Very, very few plants can tolerate any salt. I think that this...

PH is still too low help

I agree about the kits, enough to give me a headache when I get through all of the tests! I am also curious about pH meters. I have used them in biology labs at previous jobs, but they were pricey. I had a low pH problem when I used Coral Life salt. I remedied that with Kent Super Buffer and...

    recomended pet stores in Minnesota

The two I go to are 'A World of Fish' and 'Something Fishy'. They are both in Richfield, just south of Hwy 62. They are just a couple of blocks from each other. Both stores I would consider OK. But, they are the best saltwater stores I have found overall in the Twin Cities, so far. They are...

bad bad snails... just dont know what or how they got there. ID? w/pics

I would go to the Reef Central site and inquire at the 'Ask Dr Ron' forum. He is a sandbed expert and does research on predatory snails. He is usually able to ID snails for people and give advice on what to do with them. Just be sure to read his sticky posts at the top of the forum about how...
