I use nothing. I have a canopy with MH. I removed the top of the canopy so if you look straight down into the tank, you see the lights and water, but from the from the front or sides you see the hood. This was really the only way I could use my existing canopy and not have hat issues with the MH.

More of the same, the water in my tank passes through a prefilter before it enters the sump. My ER skimmer doesn't even have a prefilter on it.
