Setting up a 55 Gal, filtration?

I agree with fishman830, 10% every other week would be much better. Alison, bio-balls are alot like bio-wheel in an eclipse system. They are bacteria factories. I'll try to explain as best as possible. You have thousands upon thousands of these bacteria in you tank. All they do is one of two...

Not true. I've seen and had links bumped off -- & FE. They just have guidelines which are (IMO) more detailed.

Setting up a 55 Gal, filtration?

i am going to run the bio-balls, the skimmer, and the uv with 70lbs of LR and 2" sand bed and call it good Sounds good, just keep an eye on those nitrates. You'll need to export them somehow. Macro, trate filter or frequent water changes.

I'm Band from putting my website

OK - I agree 30 posts and all this could be considered whiny. And yes, I have the upmost regard for NM reef, Kip, and bang. I consider them three of the more influential people when I began and grew into this hobby. My only point is that the mods and swf.com should get together and start...

    to much filtration?

In a general statement, there's never really too much filtration. However, for your tank - you are starting to pay for lots of things that you're not really completely using. The skimmer and canister are probably enough. Heck, just a water change every so often would be ok. You have alot of...

Setting up a 55 Gal, filtration?

Couple of things here- It sounds like you are considering a DSB. If so, do you know about the potential (<-notice I said potential *key note here*) for the sand bed to eventually fail? I do have a DSB, and it works great, but there is a part of our reef-spciety that is noticing DSB failure...

I'm Band from putting my website

Well, first off - I am grateful. Second, (IMHO) I think it would be more appropriate to say something like, "In my opinion, this IS the BEST site out there PERIOD." I find that denoting that something is your personal opinion and not something that you're jamming down other people's throats...

    intank fuge

Sounds like it should work. There are many hang on fuges for sale. The only problem I could see with that is 1) water movement in the fuge 2)suction cups go bad after a while (at least in my tank) so you really don't want the whole fuge dumping into your tank. Maybe a hang on plastic brace or...

I'm Band from putting my website

I have two things to say about this thread. First, per the swf.com forum posting policy, Please do not post any links to any websites when using the Saltwaterfish.com Message Boards. Please do not refer to other websites or request product information from other members via email. You may lose...

    Help!!!!!

Can you elaborate a little more? How do you mean the lighting is no good? In most cases, the biggest thing that could happen is your corraline dies off. We need more info on your setup thought.

Best way to get rid of hair algae?

Not to jump on the bandwagon here, but the most likely cause for your algae is phosphates. I know you may feel that you don't have any. In fact, you may be able to test with many different test kits and still get a reading of 0. The reason is that all you phosphates are getting used by the...

    180 gallon wooden aquarium............

cincyreefer - why do you feel firedad720 would be happier with an all glass tank? I only ask because I'm planning a wooden tank with a starfire glass front, and would like to hear wood tank owner's feedback. Thanks. BTW, firedad720, I got this from another site which has plans for building...

    Anyone with all-glass modern series

Reb - rethink this... I have a modern series AGA canopy. I got it in the OAK. It matches the AGA Oak modern stand I have. With a little ingenuity, I have a PC/MH retro system in the canopy. All I had to do, was carefully remove the center brace from the canopy - a flathead screwdriver works...

    high Nitrate ?

Overfeeding, and I (personally) am against bio balls. Aren't they good nitrate producers? That could be your issue as well. Also try to get some macroalgae in there to take up excess nitrates.

    deep sand bed

It sounds like you really want a refugium as opposted to a sump. A sump is a place for mechanical filtration, checmical additives etc. A fuge is a place for biological filtration and a refuge for live fish & coral food to reproduce. In that case - IMO, go with a DSB about 4-6 inches, and put...
