    MH blowing timers

It's weird, the electricity still goes through, but the timer stops keeping time. I find most of the time it's when the lights go off! That's REALLY weird 'cause I could imagine the power draw to start the lights, but excess power when powerinf off just sounds wrong.

    MH blowing timers

I've been thru about 10 timers from HD. Every other day, it seems, my metal halides blow the timers:confused:  I use the grounded run-of-the-mill timers for like $10. Are these just too cheap, or should I be using something else? As you can see in my sig. I only have 2 175watt MHs...

    breeding bacteria

During the cycling process should you leave your lights on or leave them off. I've left mine off during the first week, but have not seen any change in my cycle. This week I am trying with the lights on. Can anyone just ask the ammonia-eating bacteria in their tank what they prefer. I've...

    Help with lighting

I agree with Dvskin, both VHOs go actinic, the MHs have enough full spectrum for you. As far as the price, I got the same system for 500 (I think including shipping) and they seem to be working fine. Me one MH bulb doesn't fire so great it I let it sit for a couple of days, but that rarely...

    Cycling With Live Rock

Sorry if this is slightly off subject.... I started my cycle 9 days ago. Three big shrimp - ammonia is approx. 3.0:eek: I'm OK with waiting for the cycle, but the tank still REEKS! I took two of the shrimp out last weekend, and took the last shrim out on Sat. Every time I open the glass tops...

    LED question

Thanks again Agro. Yes it is regulated, and I have 47 ohm resistors that I'll be using. I'll solder and tape this week. My tank went cloudy again, once it settles and the light are hooked up I'll post a pic. for anyone that's interested.

    how many

If ivanfj suggests adding clean-up crews slowly, then explain that contradiction to swf.coms full reef cleanup crews. Don't get me wrong, I definately want to order from here, but I also want to do what is best for my animals. Would adding say an entire 55 - 90 reef package be, in the end...

    LED question

This is a HEADACHE!!! (It's a good thing my company makes advil) :D :D :D I have no clue weather my power supply is regulated or unregulated. I threw out the packaging, so is there a way to tell off the supply itself? The LEDs have a 3.7 forward voltage rating. If you can't do a parallel...

    Attn: GatorCSM

Thanks sucram. I had seem that same picture of your tank on your webpage, and it inspired me to create moonlighting as well. I went a Radio Shack and had a well educated man help me with the problem. I didn't like his answer because he asserted that the onlly correct way to wire this was to...

    best lighting for nightime viewing?

Maybe it's not "pure" night vision, but my sony camcorder can "see at night". I can also do a reddish "colored" night vision. I used it at an aquarium in Capetown S.A., on some deep water/ all black tanks. The fish never even flinched. It was really cool. And no, no news company or military...

    LED question

You can be a little more exact. There's no "directions" for the system as I am building it from scratch from Radio Shack. I just put the resistor in so as to not blow the LEDs. Here's my hang-up: From what I understand - P = V/I P = power V = volts I = ?amps? and R (also) = V/I So my LEDs...

    lightspeed cycle??

Cool, thanks. I'll do a full batttery of tests tonight and see where things are. I'll also take out two shrimp, then maybe I won't have to sleep on the couch anymore LOL :)

    lightspeed cycle??

Sat. morning I put in three huge tiger <cocktail> shrimp to start my cycle. Right after I added stress zyme. Sun afternoon I tested ammonia. It register around 3.0. Last night I tested again and it was at .2!! I know that the bacterial reproduces by splitting so 140,000 bacteria...

    best lighting for nightime viewing?

Neat idea with the night vision goggles. Spurrs a question - If I have a camcorder that has night vision, I should have no problem recording & taking pictures of any creatures I'll have in the tank at night, right??

    diatoms

NJbluefish... If you don't have a source for RO/DI water, let me know. I'm in bridgewater and don't mind making some for a fellow SW fan. I'm in the process of cycling the tank as well. I have no live stock, but I'm going to buy alot of LR in about two weeks. Then things should kick off...

    advice needed!

lagatbezan, first welcome to the board. Second IMO DSB is the way to go. Third, you can get SD from some HDs. You're in NY so there's a good chance you can find it. I'm in NJ, and found it fairly easily. Are you from any part of NY which is near NJ? If so I have about 2 bags (100lbs.) that...

    LED question

I origionally posted this question to Gator. But, seeing as he in underwater right now, can anyone else help me... This weekend I bought 5 2600 MCD blue LEDs. They're rated 20 - 30 mA. I also bought a 4.5 V power supply which produces 700 mA. Then I bought a 440 Ohm resistor. I put the LEDs in...

    Denitrifying !!!

Sorry about the late reply.... Yes, I went to the LFS to check it out. The owner only had one and he said it was crap. According to him having the natural alternatives were better because there was less maitenece and it is more natural to the habitat. As we all know we should never go on just...
