Small fans, blowing over the surface, do a better job than I would have expected. I guess you'll have to wait until summer to see what your temps are. I may be in the minority; but IMO & IME, temps slightly above 80-82 are no problem at all.

I do agree with Speg; if you have enough mature LR, bio-balls may be taken out. But here's the other side. Bio-balls are excellent at culturing aerobic bacteria that converts ammonia/nitrite to nitrate. They do not hold nitrate and they aren't "nitrate factories". Nitrate is in the water column...

Nitrates don't really bother fish at a level that should be easy to maintain with regular water changes. As to the ammonia and stocking question: the aerobic bacteria that converts ammonia thrives in filters, substrate, etc., as well as LR. I've never really seen a well set-up system that...

Sure, if you have enough room, triggers usually do fine with each other. there may be some pecking order stuff at first; and avoid 2 of the same species. Avoid aggressive triggers (and most puffers) with lions. IMO & IME, this should be the first rule of keeping lionfish.
