    Help need bigger pump.

Again without running the numbers, my gut reaction is you'd be fine with those overflows. If not, the addition of ball valves would take care of any minor shortfalls. Is it overkill? hmmmmm I'd say possibly but others will argue. Remember if you're using the single pump to drive all your water...

    "the theory of the cycle"

Okay Broomer, I'll agree with all that but .... the original question still remains .... I'm getting ready to cycle 250 gallons of water, by putting more raw shrimp in, do I compensate for a higher initial bioload of fish when I first stock my tank? Providing, of course, that I am monitoring the...

    "the theory of the cycle"

LOL Broomer *all* that for an "I don't know" ????? OMG man you're slacking off again! Okay all you microbiology majors out there, jump in, inquisitive minds want to know. Later, Paul

    "the theory of the cycle"

I've been thinking lately about the whole "cycling" concept and have some, possibly retorical," questions. First let me say that I think I understand the concept but ... Okay, the general concensus here is that using a raw shrimp to start the cycle is probably the *right* way to go. So, I have...

Need Tips for Protecting the Filter Intake, "sea anemone was nearly killed"

Might I suggest using a small piece of fiberglass screening material to cover it rather than a sponge? Only because the intake is so small that a sponge will probably clog and restrict flow fairly substantially. Just my .02 as usual. Later, Paul

    Help need bigger pump.

I haven't had time to check the numbers yet but I'll say that if it has 1.5 and 1.75 I/O then it's putting out some SERIOUS water. Regarding HD and Lowes having pumps, here in FL they don't carry ANY pumps that are saltwater safe, believe me I looked. Also if you try to special order the safe...

    Lower Watt MH

No you cannot put a 175watt bulb in a fixture with a 400 watt ballast. The *socket* (mogul) is the same but tbe ballast will blow the 175. Just my .02, Paul

    UV Size?

Hmmmmm well, I'm still in the process of setting up my tank so obviously I have no, zero, zip, nada experience to back this up but ... I've been researching this thing for about 9 months now and I have *never* seen anything about corals bringing parasites into the tank. Not that I've even...

    UV Size?

LOL eel freak, if you're going to have to justify saying no to an LFS you're going to be broke in no time! I'm far from an expert but ... there is a school of thought that the UV on a reef tank will kill most of the benificial bacteria that is needed for the live rock/sand to do their job...

My my, learn something everyday ...

ROFLMAO nope he forgot that one broomer ! He did tell me that the pretty pink aquarium gravel would be a great substrate for a reef tank though, and it would be much cheaper than aragonite which he didn't stock btw LOL Later, Paul

My my, learn something everyday ...

just got back from local petsmart where I was picking up a pump. Well guess what all? According to the salesperson there, "any pump that's safe for freshwater, is safe for saltwater!" I really wanted him to make a quick call to, oh say, Little Giant or Beckett and tell them that since they both...

32 watt bulbs on 55 watt ballast?

It certainly makes sense but .... Ice Cap Ballasts appear to be unique in their construction. I say this primarily because they are the only ballast I've ever seen that allows for dimmer control. Not sure what the heck the diff is but I know there must be a fairly big one ... again, just my .02...

    Mag drive 700 pump

Running 2 Mag 7's, 1 Mag 5 and 1 Mag 2 all external and all working great. Although they are fairly new, less than 1 month of 24/7 operation, they seem to be working great, bit on the hot side since they are external. I wish they were a bit quieter but since I have nothing to compare them to, I...

32 watt bulbs on 55 watt ballast?

Are you sure about that 10K? I've been told that you can underdrive a bulb but not overdrive it  Just my .02, maybe the electrical wizard Broomer can jump in here and share an opinion or thirty :) Later, Paul

amount of GPH for a sump to a 110

Just one thing to add to broomer's post, well not add but maybe worth mentioning. Everything I've read leads me to believe there is NO harm in reducing the output of a pump using a valve, the back pressure is just like normal "head" pressure. The danger is in throttling back the "inflow" don't...

Good deal on Skimmer and NO lights in Los Angeles

Deuce, how old is the skimmer? The Aqua-C site doesn't show any of their models (120 or 180) with that footprint and height. Thanks, Paul

    ok i'm an idiot

not an idiot at all LOL just let it settle, mine took about 2-3 days to clear up. The one thing I do wonder about though, did you put your 2 lbs of live sand in regular water too? Lthe LS shouldn't go in until your salt levels are correct. Just my opinion of course, Paul
