    Too much light?

Sorry, forgot to mention that it's a 30 Long model, so the tank is, in fact, 36" long. The fixture has 2x250w halides and 2x65w actinic pc bulbs. I'm toying with building a chiller using an old cube fridge I've got in the garage. I really don't have $500 to throw down on a chiller right now...

    DIY Chiller

My dad's tank is running about 82 degrees. He has a fan on the canopy, and that helps a little. I'm thinking about making a DIY chiller by taking a mini cube fridge and running some piping through one side, winding it around in there, and then out the other side. Has anyone tried this? Would...

    Too much light?

I found a 630 halide/pc combo fixture, 36" long, for $360. I want a halide for my 30 gallon, but I'm worried 21 watts per gallon is too much. If I can keep my water cool, will that still burn my corals? Is it possible to have too much light?

    Branching sponges question

I've seen people do that when growing plants, so it would make sense. If you have a branching sponge, try it. Worst thing that will happen is you will wind up with two sponges; the original and the piece you cut off.

    Montis?

I've seen quite a few people who have had luck with monti's under pc lights. I've got 196 watts over a 30 long. If I place them as high in the tank as possible (a few inches under the surface), will they live? Can I expect them to keep their color if they do survive?

    Glass Polish

I picked up a used tank for next to nothing, but the glass is hazy due to its use as a terrarium. I'm planning on turning it into a reef tank this week. Are glass polishing compounds safe to use on reef tanks? Obviously I'd give it a thorough rinse after I'm done. Just wondering if anyone's...

    125 on 2nd floor

I'd contact a general contractor and have an engineer come check out your house. Then I'd make sure your homeowner's policy will cover it if something does happen. Even then, I probably wouldn't put it directly over anything I ever wanted to see again.

    help w/ the first coral

Sorry, but I have some bad news. 1. 40 gallons is WAY too small for any tangs. Get those out of there and take them back to the store. Also, you should NEVER put three tangs in a tank smaller than 100 gallons. The clownfish is fine. I wouldn't put any fish in there longer than four or five...

My 29gl. mixed reef(first pic post)

Awesome tank! I've got a double-bulb PC light coming UPS tomorrow. I LOVE acros and montis but I hadn't heard of anyone having success w/ them under anything but halides. Calcium and alkalinity combined w/ high flow is your secret, huh? Anything else I should know before I try the same thing?

    Professional tank setup cost?

Thanks guys. I really didn't even have a ballpark figure for him, so you helped a bunch. If anyone has anymore advice, I'd love to hear it.

    Professional tank setup cost?

Today, a wealthy friend of mine asked if I could set up and maintain a reef tank in his house. He said he'd pay me to do all the work. I told him I could do it, but I said I'm not exactly a pro. My question is, how much do you professionals charge to do stuff? He wants about a 75-100 gallon...

    Dyed anemome?

I just lost an anemone this morning, and I'd like to replace it, after I find out why I lost it. I think it might have been dyed, and I'm looking for someone to check my theory. I had it for several months, and it was the coolest looking anemone I've ever seen, and I haven't been able to find...

    John's New Tank Diary.......

Sorry for the lack of posts on your thread! I think your tank looks awesome. I can't wait to see what those browned-out acros look like when they get their color back.

    "Expert Only" Coral, please help

Would frequent water changes help with the ammonia, etc? How will I know if it starts to die?

Lets see pics of your aquascaping.

MonaLisa, how does your seahorse do in your tank? My wife REALLY wants one, but I was under the impression that they required a species-specific tank with a low amount of flow. Looks like you have a gorgonian in there, which I was told required moderate-to-high flow b/c it's a filter feeder...
