    My first 5-Pak

Ok, here is my 60 gal hex I promised ya. First is the in tank refug that I made. Outlet from canister blows right through it, but not a lot. It has 1 snail in there to keep detrius buildup down. The cheato is growing like mad, so I need to harvest some soon. The second pic is the top of tank...

    My first 5-Pak

Thats a great shot...actually my favorite of all your pics! Dont be dissapointed! Mine isnt half as nice as that! I only have a few coral right now, but I am proud of my rockscaping :-) I will get pics tonight for sure.

    ick.......

I have used a product called "kick-ich". It works great, and no ill effects. I was told by LFS to use it, and they use it all of the time with no ill effects. It attacks the swimming stage of ich, so it will rid the tank of it all.

    My first 5-Pak

I keep saying i will take pics and post, then i always forget by the time i get home...i promise i will tonight! Look for my post tomorrow. My tank isnt as nice as yours, but I'll post anyway so you can see another 60 hex. Yours was the first i ever saw pics of, and it looks great!

    i dont know

I test for iodine/iodide. The test kit is not something I would 100% rely on for the results, as they seem a bit inconsistent, but not completely out of wack. I believe you get iodine through proper water changes with most salts anyway. I admit, i dose it on a weekly basis. I use 5ml in my 60...

    My first 5-Pak

Awesome tank my fellow 60 hex reefer! I will take some pics tonight and post. I like what you did with the rockwork, that was my biggest challenge in that tank! Looks great, and congrats on a job well done :jumping:

    PH Problem

Firey...A fuge is a place to grow pods, keep little critters that are benficial to the tank, or to put flora such as cheato in so it doesnt get eaten all up by herbivores. There are a few types...hang on inside, hang on outside, ones that use pumps to get water in and out etc that are basically...

    Tiny Aiptasia

Manually removing is tough, unless it is in the sand/crushed coral. I was able to just grab those guys. Removing from LR is much tougher as they can shrink real small, real fast. Joes juice works great. Do not just squirt it around. It has to be squirted into the mouth of the aptasia. Use your...

change in the color of my live sand

Normal for sand and really any substrate to look a bit funky when veiwing from the glass into the thickness of it. Have your tap water tested. Even with conditioners, there are many contaminants that can be introduced through this method of water changes. Copper, bacterium, other heavy metals...

    Lights

Agreed with Mlpsman, surge protectors are always good to use as the first line of defense, but you should have a gfci plug. I had an electrician install one when he came to do other work. Much safer. Also make sure plugs/protectors are after a "loop" in the wire...in other words, dont have...

    What would you do?

I wouldn't want to be responsible for anyone else's tank, but especially for a mother in law who can't keep a plastic plant alive. The book idea is perfect. That way youre involved, but not with any life/death situations and the extra work. I find it hard enough to have time to do my own tank, I...

    Project 300 is underway!!!

Yaaay! Looks awesome Rob! Congrats on all your hard work, it certainly looks like it was worth it. I wish you many years of happy reefing with that set up! Beware of me picking your brain a year or so down the road when I move into our next home!

    serpent star

Thanks as usual Oph...I cant even begin to tell you how many i must have! On each side of the hex tank I can see the side of the cc, I can always spot a few per side up against the glass. Cool... :jumping:

Ophiura...i have a q about whitish britttlestar Amphipholis squamata... I notice a lot of them in my crushed coral substrate, up against the glass. DO they ever come out to the surface, or is that their best home? I would love to "urge" some out and have them on my live rock etc....if I scoop...

    curing phosphate issue..

Got ya. In that case, im not sure that shortening the duration of a light cycle will help. I would be inclined to say it wouldnt matter since it is the source water causing it. If you do water changes with better water, that will cure it better.

    curing phosphate issue..

Phosphate isnt only about the light source.... It is caused by overfeeding, improper cleaning rituals, and could even be the source water you are using. There also may be other reasons I'm not thinking of right now. Look at everything you are doing as a whole before you pinpoint just one...
