URGENT: How can you tell if a starfish is dead?

Yes a starfish when feeding on the glass will expell it's stomach. That's how they feed on the algae. Hillbilly

I just went through a 30 hr outage. I wasen't home until the last couple of hrs. 28 hrs no circulation and temp dipped to 60F From my normal 80-82F. Ran out and got 2 battery powered air pumps meant for minnows for fishing. This got a little circulation going. Began removeing a little...

    Queen Conchs?

I have a Queen conch I bought online for about $2.50 if I remember right. It does a great job on algae and I have seen mine eating cyanobacteria occasionaly. It won't eat it all the time but does seem to enjoy a snack of it now and then. Hillbilly

    can you add ls

It the substrate you have now is argonite sand it is most likely pretty live now with the amount of live rock You have in your tank. If I were to add live sand I would do it a little at a time say half inch at a time to keep any critters you have from becomeing trapped too deep in the sandbed...

    live sand sucks

The brown is normal. Probably just a diatom bloom. Most new setups go through it. Should clear up after a while. Hillbilly

    First Tank

Don't even think of adding another fish until your ammonia and nitrite levels are 0. You will only hurt not help the cycle. Your LFS is nuts. It is not uncommon for the ammonia levels to stay high for two or three weeks. Your cycle could run 1 to 2 months. May go faster but You can't count...

    Nature's Ocean Sand

Oh Yes about the CC. I too had to do the switch. I would just take the CC out and add the sand. Place some of the CC in pantyhose sacks on the surface of your bed for awhile so the bacteria have a chance to migrate to the sand. I didn't even do that and experienced only a small and short...

    Nature's Ocean Sand

Yes there are many options. For a long time it was thought that silica sand was no good. Now many say it's OK. You can save a lot of money by using "dead sand" and adding a litte bit of live to seed it or just relying on your live rock for the seeding. Works but takes longer. I did My DSB by...

    Damsels

My 2 damsels, a Domino and a Yellow tailed blue harrass each other but not seriously. Seems more of a game between them. Chaseing but no nipping. They were my first tank occupants. I added a firefish goby which is pretty peaceful and the damsels gave it the same chase treatment for about a...

    live sand expiration date

If it is not yet expiered I would buy it. Most products with an expiration date have a built in saftey factor and are good for a while, sometimes a long time after the date. You might even get the dealer to cut you a deal on it if it is close to expiering. They know if they don't sell it now...

    HAS ANY 1 ORDERED ONLINE?

I haven't ordered fish yet but I have ordered inverts. Snails and crabs also live rock and sand. I'd say I have been happy with my purchases so far. Second day shipping works for live rock and sand. I would make sure I was getting next day service on any fish or inverts. Hillbilly

    green brain

I tend to agree with alianated. I ony have experience with the Open Brain corals, which have hard skeletons. They should do fine on the sand or rock as long as their other requierments are met. With the closed brain types I'm afraid I have no experience with them. Hillbilly
