    DIY Wavebox

Been running now for almost a week. I've had the controller made for a while though, just took me a minute to get around to the box. Without the box, I was getting a 1 in wave, with the box, it's almost 2.75 inches from top to bottom.

    Cooking Live Rock

Been a while since I've been online, I see some understand the concept and some don't. I know cooking LR works, after I finished cooking the rock, my Bryopsis is gone, and I now have none of the issues I had prior to cooking. As far as phosphate is concerned, I never had phosphate above .001...

    DIY Wavebox

tutorial. Google those three words and that will give you what you need to build one. To make a wavebox, you must use a DC powerhead, not AC. Most all Tunze powerheads, except the nano I believe, are DC powered(controllable). I bought a Tunze 6100 of the other large board for $150. Put...

    Halide bulb longevity?

There is a difference in the life span of bulbs as far as Kelvin is concerned. Most 20K bulbs last only 6 months before their spectrum shifts dramatically. While an Iwaki 6500K can last 2 years before the output falls substantially. Of course if you overdrive your MH bulbs with HQI ballasts...

    Metal Halide Ballests???

Yes, you must have a ballast to fire a MH lamp, or fluorescent bulb. The ballast is what limits the current in the circuit. Basically, it powers your lights, without a ballast-you have nothing. Here are my three, top is an IceCap 660 for my actinics, and the bottom two are each IceCap...

    Calcium Reactor Questions...

Not the best pics, but here are a couple shots of my Ca reactor and CO2 tank. The green line on the top of the reactor feeds CO2 from my tank into the bubble counter on the reactor, then into the reactor itself. The white line is attached to an aqua lifter pump which takes in tank water from...

    Calcium Reactor Questions...

Wasn't trying to hold you to it, I just wanted to make sure people realize a 5 lb tank lasts much longer than 2 months. Even at 60 bpm, a 5 lb tank should last 6 months. Korallin Reactors are very efficient and require less CO2 than most reactors to run. I don't have a huge load on my tank...

    Calcium Reactor Questions...

I love my Korallin, it's made my life much easier... I think a pH controller is nice to have, but I don't think you have to have one to run a Ca reactor by any means, especially if you send the effluent to your skimmer. I think it really depends on how good of a needle valve you have on your...

    Calcium Reactor Questions...

I own a Korallin 1502. Besides the reactor itself, you will need a CO2 tank(once you get it, you need to take it to a welding store to have it filled), a regulator to place on the CO2 tank to regulate the flow of CO2(most regulators come with a bubble counter as my JBJ did, though some don't)...

    Octopus NW150 Skimmer problems

I see no air intake(venturi) with tubing on the inlet of the pump. I'd go to Home Depot and buy a 1/4' male to male water fitting in the plumbing aisle, then buy 1/4' tubing to attach to the water fitting. This is one mod that will not constrict the pumps air intake as the original venturi...

    Wavemakers & Tunze Pumps

You need a controllable tunze(DC pump)-(i.e. 6100, 6101, 6200, 6201) to be able to make a wave box with a DIY controller. I made the controller for mine(6100), but haven't gotten around yet to making the actual wave box the pump sits in. I will say the $5 he suggests it costs to build the...

    Octopus Skimmer Question

In a recirc, the skimmer pump is essentially a closed loop with the skimmer, it takes water from the skimmer body, and injects it back in. You typically either feed the skimmer by gravity, or a small pump such as a maxi-jet. With a normal needle wheel skimmer, the skimmer pump takes in water...

    MH Wiring Question

I completely forgot my timers also have on/off switches....Though, I still have to use the power strip because I run 3 plugs(2 ballasts and a fan) off that timer.

    MH Wiring Question

Just use both as I do...I have both my MH ballasts, as well as a fan, plugged into a power strip, which in turn plugs into a timer. So, if for any reason I want to turn my MH's off during the day when the timer is on, all I do is flip the switch on power strip.

    Octopus Skimmer Question

Yes, recirc's are better skimmers. You slow down the dwell time between the SW and air to allow for more removal of organics. If you don't mind spending more cash, the performance is better. That being said it is very easy to turn a normal needlewheel skimmer into a recirc skimmer if you are...

    MH Wiring Question

Personally, I wouldn't do either. All you need is a timer to plug the ballast into, that way you never have to worry about turning the ballast on and off. However if you really want to turn your lights on and off every day, just plug the ballasts into a power strip...which will serve as your...
