    best plant for a refugium?

Mangroves are neat but not really the best for nutrient absorbsion. Thy just grow mass to slowly. Gracilaria is a great algae loved by most herbavoirs, but is tough to keep alive or keep growing. Thier is a guy called billsreef that lives on the east coast and has a good variety of algae's Mike

    Slime algae

Sounds like cyanobactor. Its presnce is telling you that you have some excess nitrogen (nutrients) in the gravel. Allowing it to suck it up is a good way of exporting the nutrient from your tank. You can try to get a little deeper on your syphon to get the material that is actually causing the...

    Is my feather duster dying??

cyanobacteria is kinda like a red slime algae. On a side note I would lay the feather duster flat on the rocks and not keep it in the sand, bacteria can really hurt it more while in this state. Mike

    over kill??

400 watts is alot of light. It will limit you to very light demanding corals. Acclimation should be slow, I always use the screen method. get some window screens from HD and put about 4 on top of each other and then every week pull one off. Mike

    Coral growth

When are coral grows its tissue cells devide and thus it grows. Light energy from your bulbs is taken in by the zoox algae that live with in the tissue of the coral. This energy is converted to sugars and basic carbs along with trace aminos. Couple this with the nutrients the coral absorbs...

What are these things killing my tank?!?

Just get some good carbon from the LFS and put it into a nylon bag (lfs should have them if you ask, filter bag) and then put it on the output of your drain line and/or your skimmer output. Mike

What are these things killing my tank?!?

Yep Water changes are your best friend at this stage. even if it means replacing it all. I would start looking around for dead stuff also, thier might be something hiding behind a rock or something like that that is dead. you could also do some more ammonia tests but try to be more specific with...
