How long has your tank been set up? If it's a new set up the tank needs to cycle for a few weeks. The levels will convert from ammonia ->nitrite->nitrate. I wouldn't do it unless you can get one really cheap. I would say the flame is eating your peppermints. I would throw a peppermint in for mine every now and then. Some he ate right away and others he left alone for a while.

I had the same problem. Use a razor blade to scrape it off. Definitely remove the filter to do it. You will probably see a few pop up in your tank at some point. If it's on the filter it's probably in the tank. Just keep an eye out for any in your tank and pick it off without bursting the bubble.

What kind of xenia? I'd leave it alone for a few days and see what it looks like. Could just be the stress of acclimating. Maybe some one will have an idea on the brown spots. Xenia can be very strange. I've had colonies that I thought were dying for sure a few days later look better than ever...
