Last Question on MH bulbs

Currently running 1 each 250 watt AB and Ushio dbl ended bulbs. I prefer the Ushio. Side by side there does not appear to be a visual difference to me, however I do SEEM to get better coral expansion from LPS under the Ushio, and sps growth under the Ushio has been noticeably swifter. Fes

Is it possible the 2nd "outlet" in one overflow is for water return?

Skimmer efficiency affected by return rate???

Been using this skimmer for several years now. Love it! Cleanliness is an issue, but it's part of weekly maintenance for me. As far as the returns needing to be above the water level in sump...not 100% true. I hard plumbed in a 90 degree elbow then pvc all the way to bottom of sump. The catch...

    rumors about yellow sebae anemone????

Typical Sebae is white to cream color with sometimes purple tips. Photos of dyed yellow sebae anemones are in the back of Delbeek and Sprung reef aquarium books. These dyed anemones don't always die but they have a very difficult time ridding their bodies of this dye and may starve during this...

    Need anemone ID please

You can also cover over the portion of rock it WAS on with the same epoxy used for attaching corals to rocks.

    Berlin Classic skimmer problem

Been using one of these for 5 years now. The "cross-piece" should be on the bottom of the inner acrylic tube. Break in can be tough on this skimmer IME. I clean it weekly and takes a good 24 hours before foam gets going good again. Hot water (boiling usually, purified of course) with a syringe...

    MH Pendant

Hey Katfish, built my own hood for a 92 gal corner tank. Not that hard, but, I'll admit it, time consuming. E-mail me at nicholas@wcc.net and I'll send pics

    anyone useing a chiller...?

First and current chiller for me is a Teclima CA600 (or is it 680)? Works like a charm on my 92 gal tank. Only gripe I have, cannot adjust to tenths of a degree (no big) and there is a 2 degree "window" before chiller kicks in. SO if temp is set at 78, chiller kicks on at 80. I DO like the...

    New (to me) Clownfish Host

With all the recent questions and advice on anemones and whether or not to keep 'em (good and bad), have witnessed something new to me. I've seen clownfish in anemones, hammer corals, anchor corals, mushrooms, and various and sundry other "surrogate hosts". Recently purchased a pair of skunk...

Definitely not one to run full-time. I have a system 1 I use when I scrape algae off glass. Algae never has much choice but to be sucked right in......

    1970's tank

David, don't think conversion to salt is a good idea. Salt water will corrode any metal (w/ a FEW exceptions). Slate MAY support the weight maybe not, plus the chemical interactions in saltwater combined with that material could lead to nightmarish interactions in a saltwater environment.

Strange worm with hard body!! What is it??

Dunno about the multiplying thing. The sources I've seen state that they will eat coralline algae. however, they do so VERY slowly in my experience. In my opinion, when they clear a spot new coralline usually grows there just as fast.

Adding Freshwater to top off salt tank

Noticed the same thing when I just dump water in. Couple possible reasons: 1) Water is a little cooler? 2) Lower salinity levels are slightly easier for fish to breathe in, kinda like us standing in front of a fan on a hot day, and 3) Related to #2 cooler water has more oxygen "holding"...

blacklights as moonlights? yes or no

Night lights are available at most stores that use a green or blue LED. No heat issues at all. Downside is they plug directly into a 110 outlest, so you'd have to watrerproof the connections (plasti-dip). Used 2 of 'em in a power strip SECURELY fastened inside hood on 30 gal tank.

Holes in returns to prevent siphon

I used something in the neighborhood of 1/16. Make sure to drill the hole so that it is underwater approx 1/8" when tank is full to avoid probs Rendo pointed out.

blacklights as moonlights? yes or no

Interesting question. Only thing I'd be concerned about would be UV radiation. However, prob negligible unless you opt for a high wattage bulb. Would love to see what corals look like under that!

Only thing I can think of that MAY remotely look like what you're describing sounds like a chiton. Did it look like this? http://www.reefs.org/hhfaq/pages/picture_pages/faq_chiton.html
