    Cyno?

I would go down to your local supply store and purchase a carton of "Black Diamond Activated Carbon." Get a porous sinch bag, fill it up, and sink it in your sump near a powerhead. You really can't have too much carbon in your tank, and if the "Emperor 400" is what I think it is....it doesn't...

    Cyno?

Metronidazole is primarily a fungicide. In the medical profession it is known by the brand name "Flagyl" because it is used to kill intestinal infections such as those caused by flagellates. I'm not sure if it is indicated for cyanobacteria. If you want to use an antibiotic I would go with...

    how to

If you're talking about Caulestria you just break it at the base of the stalk where the hard calcified skeleton is not colored.

    algae

The purple algae is coralline, the green is probably not. The "rust" was definately diatoms. Diatoms feed off of silica and phosphates in your water supply if i'm not mistaken, once this fuel is exhausted they die off and the other more colorful algae begin to propagate. Once you finish...

    Beginner Corals

Looks like a great list....good variety. You may investigate into the leathers a little further. There is great variety among the different species with regards to color, shape, and size. They also will thrive under PC lighting with good water quality. I wish you luck. I think you'll soon...

planning a new 75 gallon tank

I think your list is a little light on the critters ;-) I would suggest beefing up the clean-up crew. I have a 55g Hex with 10 emeralds, which are great IMHO, about 40 hermits, and a total of about 15 different shrimp. I also have a Royal Gramma in with a six-line wrasse, I don't know of any...

Can anyone ID this??? and is it ok for my Reef Tank???

If you'ld like to try the freshwater dip I would recommend using either distilled or RO/DI. The liverock dip will likely kill any invertebrate inhabitants including sponges, tubeworms, etc...Lots of hobbyists freshwater dip their rock to avoid populating their displays with mantis shrimp and...

Can anyone ID this??? and is it ok for my Reef Tank???

I see the dilemma, why not as a solution empty the display tank, freshwater dip your liverock, and recycle the display? It would be more like a month than 8-9mos. I doubt a creature like this could tolerate a change in specific gravity like a freshwater dip.

    Does This Sound Good?

Sounds great, I would do without the protein skimmer though. Frequent 10-20% water changes per week will eliminate the need for a skimmer IMHO. I've been running a 55gal hex for about two years now skimmerless without a hitch. The prizm and other hang-on skimmers are essentially useless in my...

    High Current Corals?

My leather species seem to do fine in high current areas, green star polyps do very well in high current in my experience. I would not place any of them in direct flow of a powerhead though. Other things like sponges and gorgonians would do well in high current although I don't have any in my...

    Fighting Conch, Shrimp Temp

Peppermint shrimp are excellent for hair algae, they keep my small spot well under control. MichaelTX, if the shrimp die that quickly then you must have either super high nitrates or a problem with specific gravity, have you checked these levels?

Help to make tank more appealing

If you are looking for something to invest in for your tank I would definately suggest liverock at this point. Although it looks like you have a nice amount already the more the better. More liverock will provide you with more places to mount your corals, more hiding and interest for your fish...

    Suspended Algae Bloom

Hello folks, simple question here with what I hope is not a very complex answer. I just recently set up a 180 gallon reef for a friend. I started with a 5" DSB and about 200lbs. of LR. There was some significant die off on the LR by the time I was able to get it into the tank (long story)...

    Fragging Torch

Thanks for all of the thoughts guys I appreciate it. I have a pair of concave cutting blades that I use for bonsai, I think I might use them to try and make it precise. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

    Coral Questions

It blows me away how people think "their" way is the "only" way. I've been running 130 watts of PC on my 55 for over a year and half with great results, only coral I've lost was the caulestria. I am by no means an expert on any of this, but you don't need 5-10 watts per gallon to have a...

Everything you list has done well in my 55gal hex with 132watts of PC. Everything that is except "candy cane/caulestria." I think caulestria definately need more intense lighting.

    Fragging Torch

I've got a torch that is outgrowing it's place in my tank and some of the branches appear to be doing less than good. I'd like to frag it and give a portion of it to a friend of mine. I know it needs to be fragged at the base of the branch but I'm curious what you guys use to make the break...
