Building my 56 gallon Column reef tank

I'm beginning to think there is an evil hitch hiker lurking in the tank. His live rock was teeming with critters when he put it in the tank.

I said this a while back but he is fairly certain that there are none, I'm not convinced.
Sometimes, I feel like I am finding new critters each week. I get freaked out when I do my filter maintenance, since I always find some pods, worms and other critters. A lot of hitch hikers know how to hole up in the live rock really well and are rarely seen.

Try this one:
I had a Pom Pom crab in my 14G. Over a year ago, it disappeared. I was convinced that after it had lost it's anemones, that the pistol shrimp killed it. I have since tore down this tank and moved the sand to a 20G refugrium with three tiny (2" at most) chunks of rock. It showed up in my refugium which was not connected to the 14G in any way the other day! I know it's the same one, I even compared the markings with the picture I had of it from the 14G and it's still missing its anemones. I can't believe it survived and hid for this long.

well, if there is a evil one still lurking around, say a mantis, wouldnt my snails be dead by now? What has an appitite for just shrimp? If its a crab, I would have seen a molt by now right?
Again, the dead shrimp that I have pulled out of the tank, did not look abused in any way shape or form. The other 2 pepps went completely missing. I am certian with 99% accuracy that there are no shrimp in my tank right now. So what feeds on just shrimp that would leave the snails, fish, urchin, isopods, amphipods, and copepods alone?
Is it possible that if the SG was too high, the shrimp could have died?

With shrimp having a softer shell than a crab or a snail, they are easier prey for a hitchhiker. That being said, I'm still not sure that is the issue since there was no sign of trauma to the shrimp. If your salinity spiked high, it could have killed the shrimps. The ammonia reading may also have done it. Shrimps like perfect water conditions and do not do well with sudden changes in salinity. The topping off with salt water that was done on accident may have caused Big Red's death. The peppermints on the other hand, I don't know. I'm still not convinced that they're not in your tank, or that Big Red didn't kill them. I don't know, I didn't see the dead bodies.
Try two more skunk cleaners, if they die as well, there is an issue going on, and I'm going to say it's probably a hitchhiker.

Skunks are in as well as brittle starfish. They appear to be ok, well the 2 i can see. the little skunk went in and proceded to hide very well in some rocks.
It was a real sad day for our house today. My wife and I had to put down her dog. Lady was 14, and probably the best dog ever. I know everyone says that about their dogs, but I would have entered this dog into any kind of competition for "best" dog. She was as sweet as can be and loyal beyond anything. I doubt you will see my wife posting on here for quite some time.
Doing a water change tomorrow and getting some of the bad algea out. Hope to see 2 shrimp in the tank when I do. HOWEVER, the LFS told my wife that other customers of theirs are having problems with their shrimp purchases as well. Dont know what to do about that as I think both of the LFS get their supplies from the same wholesaler. If these shrimp dont make it, I might order online just to change the pace.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. :-(
I'm surprised to hear that the LFS is hearing the same shrimp issues from other people. I hope you have better luck with these guys.

I will relay the messages to my wife. It was her dog. I married into the dog. There is a really long back story to the dog, but to keep it simple the dog was found on the side of the road preggers. It had 7 puppies and all lived. All of them found homes. I came into the sitch and the first experience I have with the dog is chasing it down the middle of the street as it got out. It took like 30 minutes and a car to get her. I had only dated the future missus for about a week at the time. This dog was trained for all the basic commands. Had we had more time, she could have been a special needs/assistant dog. The kind of dog that goes into nursing homes to cheer up the residents. She played her version of fetch which was basically you toss the ball and then try like hell to catch her to get the ball back. I dont think I ever really caught her. When our kids came home from the hospital each time, she did nothing but stay at their side if my wife was recouperating. She had put up with soo much tail pulling, mouth streching, etcetera all without a single peep. Lady will be missed.
My fondest memories of Lady are when she and Tawney, my dog that we put down a few months ago, would play tug o war with the rope and socks and whatnot. Tawney was giving up about 10 to 20 pounds to Lady, but that didnt stop her from trying to get the toy. She never won, but our floor got dusted really well.
What is really sad for us, in less than a year we went from 4 dogs and 2 cats to 2 dogs and 3 cats, 2 of which are new. BTW, anyone want to adopt our foster cat?

Sorry to hear about your wife's dog. I know that it is a hard thing to do when you lose a pet that you have had for a very long time. They become one of the family, I don't know what I would do without my Artic (my Siberian Husky) He is just like a kid.

Don't Grieve

Don't grieve too long for now I'm free
I've followed the path God set for me
I ran to him when I heard his call
I swished my tail and left it all.

I could not stay another day
To bark, to Love, to Romp or Play
Games left unplayed must stay that way
I found such peace, it made my day.

My parting has left you with a void
Please fill it with remembered joy
A friendship shared, your laugh, a kiss
Oh yes, these things I too shall miss.

Be not burdened with ties of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
My life's been full, you've given so much
Your time, your love, and gentle touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your head and share with me
God wanted me, he set me free!

To all the pets we have loved and lost. (Gone but not forgotten)

Give your wife a hug from me...such a sad time

thanks all.
The skunks and brittle are doing fine. 1 of the skunks tried swimming up to the food when I fed the tank. Seems to be going well. More to come, like pics, when I get them.
