I already bought the Dell.....I have used Dell, HP, Compaq and Gateway....the only computers I have ever had issue with were Gateway...I would not take one if you paid me too...LOL
I know there are a lot of Windows haters out there.....BUT I have never had an issue, and will continue to use it (creature of habit) :)

Stay away from windows in general. Go with Lynx. Much better, more stable and not a resource hog like microsoft. Plus less holes and security risks. Tigerdirect.com, globalcomputer.com and Newegg.com are very good sites to buy pre-custom built computers. Stay away from Dell, Compaq, etc. You will get better quality products by going with a custom built computer from my experience. I have built many computers in the past.
Yea, but what is her experience with a linux product? Can she work her way around it without any problems? All tech guys stay away from M$ but not one thinks about the user and their experience with linux.

windows 2000 was the best really. XP is when M$ started to invade my privacy in what I did on my PC. Vista and 7 made things worse. If I could get my machine running on windows 2000, i would do it in a heart beat. I am sticking with XP and if/when I get a new machine, first thing I am doing is placing XP on it.

NEW Visa and Windows 7 are awesome. I liked Windows 98 and 2000, but XP I absolutely hated with a passion. The computer at work is running XP and my boss is always asking for my help, I can't navigate in that system, everything is in weird places all over the place.
Just last night my boss just wanted to change the screen picture...it changed to a tile so his picture was like 50 little ones all over the screen. You would think the gadget to stretch or fit to screen would be in personal settings to change the appearance or right where he changed the picture...but noooo. We looked or an hour and then it was time for me to go home. He told me got it but can't remember how now. AAAHHH Oh and he landed up with a blank green screen and no picture at all, but it was better than the kaleidoscope he was looking at when I left.

ricght click on desktop and choose properties. then choose the desktop tab. Browse to the pic you want to use and the strech option is in the drop down to your right.
edit: and no vista and 7 are not awesome. They are the complete opposite of awesome. Buy as a normal user, I expect you to like what M$ has done with their opporating system. Keep those blinders on, it wont matter in a few years anyway. M$ is invading your privacy completely by monitoring what you are doing on your pc. I dont want to be technical, but for those who like to burn discs or make MP3s from other discs, you know what I am talking about.

Just a side note, I'm not sure which version of office you have. But you might do some checking to see if a 32 bit version will work on the 64 bit system. I know their 2010 office will do that. But I'm not sure about older versions.
It will. I'm running Office 2003 on my new 64 bit Win7 machine at work.

The new media and internet functionality Vista and Windows 7 provides is way above that on Windows XP. I consider XP more of a 'business OS' more than a consumer OS. Vista turned out to be a nightmare, and is likened to Windows ME. Windows 7 fixed a lot of the bugs in Vista, but it's still a memory hog that can't be run on an older PC. I take it you prefer the Mac OS or Linux. Linux is fine for a computer geek, and RedHat made a decent attempt at putting together a friendly UI to try and compete with the Mac and MS users. However, you still need some decent computer knowledge when it comes to configuring Linux, and most user apps are non-exisitent. Mac's are great for media and video/photo manipulation, but they also lack the vast applications you get on Windows. Apple also overprices their hardware for what you get. I can put together a Intel box with four times the processing speed, 4 times as much RAM, twice the hard drive space, and a video card with 1GB of on-board memory for the same price as one of these Mac Desktops that barely has a decent DVD burner on it. I also never could get used to the 'one button' mouse thing. Drives me crazy when I touch one of those boxes.

Are you sure there is no hope for your old pc? How old is it? What is the processor and the RAM?

Oh how, oh how did we ever manage to get along with 256meg's of ram and dialup speed way back when? Those were the days! Remember waiting for like 5 minutes for a single and what would be considered a low resolution image in todays world to upload?

I remember buying my first HD with 1 GB. And thinking wow what a stretch... heck for that matter, I remember my dad having a computer without a HD.
