Critique my tank-sump design…

Here is the return with the pipe extra tall

I used a level to set the high of the return

Here is how it worked out

This is the return under the tank with a 1" barb fitting

I made the fitting connections so I can glue it all together then use threaded connections and Teflon tape to make all final connections

Here is my stand pipe for the overflow side

This is a threaded to slip joint I wont glue it on this side the wet side

Two threaded to slip joints the white one I had to grind down the grip ridges so it would fit
through the bulkhead hole for final assembly

This last 90 is just slipped on to help direct the flow an keep splashing down, no glue

It's lookin really good! What do you have down there supporting the egg crate, is that just pieces of the black pipe that you cut?

All that is left for the pluming is to get a 1" return hose install it and take it all apart to do a leak test outside...

That was my first thought also
, then my lazy side showed it's self when I happened to be in the pluming supplies store, I saw the slip-slip fittings
,45 cents each just the size that I needed

Hand cutting those would be a chore if you wanted them all the same height. Otherwise table saw...

Interesting build - just tagging along.

FYI multiple coats of a polyurathean ("sp", sorry I suck at spelling) will be just as waterproof as truckbed liner - although the truckbed liner may actually last longer.
Went with the Poly. The tank had been polyed inside and I had a can in the shed so I put 3 more coats on should be good for now.

Leak tested the sump
no leaks, but there was lots of creaking so much that I siliconed the entire thing. Did you know that silicone was slippery... When the right hand still has silicone film on it carry the Eheim pump in the left hand.

The pluming is done and the tank is full and I have marked the running water level and the power off water level in the sump. I have 4.5 gallons of extra water volume then needed .

I have added CaribSea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand and it made the water cloudy. So rinse the sand!

Skimmer is over flowing on its lowest flow I have pulled the drain plug and am letting it run for now I hope it is because of the cloudy water and that it needs to be broke in some. Playing with the skimmer some when I raise it I get better bubble control looks like it needs to go up 3". We shall see in the morning.

I played with the stand pipe made it longer and drilled to holes to stop the burping, all I hear is a small trickle of water and the hum of the pump now.

I would set it at it's lowest point and as it gradually breaks in you can make your adjustments from there....If your really in a rush you could pull the skimmer out and give it a vinegar bath and let it run that way to remove any oils left over to speed break in time! Looks good though!!!!!

Cool

I think 6" water depth is the magic number for those skimmers.
When I was playing with it by lifting it up 6" was about the height the foam settles down when the skimmer is set to low foam. So 6" looks about the right height we will just see as it breaks in.

Ok I will, start on the lowest amount of foam. I had it running in a 5 gallon bucket for a week so I hope that will help...
