You added more sand, I believe in deep sand area you created for the goby. How much sand did you take from display? Why was the sand you added "funky"?? Like dirty? I normally only say 1-2 cups of sand for QT, depending on size of QT.
The organic breakdown would come from the organics in the filter pad, the sand, the rock. She is going into a bit of a cycle. Since there is no fish in the tank, that is ok.

This time it came out 0.....Should I test it AGAIN?????

I hate these tests...it's API BTW.....It's also the same kit I have had since I started....SO figure July 2008....I previously bought a nitrate refill....and I am going to order an ammonia one now
can not find an expiration date anywhere

NO...I added fresh SW, used (LIVE) sand from the 225G, which was really funky...LOL

A used filter pad from my 29G....NO FISH, and as far as I know I have no hitchhikers...LOL....I DO KNOW That the sand was stirred up and there was a lot of debris in it...it was very cloudy when I first put it in...this tank is over 3 years old....and apparently the sand I dug out was dirty :(
No, I think this was in response to your question.
Looks like there was lots of organics in sand. So, no need to add more organics, such as fish food now. Just let it cycle.

Probably about 2 cups....IDK...it had a lot of "debris" in it......maybe I need more sand sifters in the 225G

Time for a new test kit tomorrow. You will need a good test kit durinng the QT process.

You need to have a definitive answer as to the state of your bio filtration not guesses. IMO add a definite organic (small piece of shrimp) let it rot and test. The goby seems to have out lasted whatever the cause of the death of the other fish so no need to rush the QT

If you had a lot of organic material in the sand it would have broken down and feed nitrifying bacteria converting it. it would have not just remained as such and started braking down when you added the sand to the QT. I do believe Beth may have something when she referenced the filter pad. Was there food stuck to it when your removed it from the DT
save your money do you have a good nitrites test kit. if you do have ammonia present you will start to read nitrites at some point. if you are good to go and you add the shrimp you will not read anything other then possable nitrates

She just set this up today. I'd suggest letting it rest. Get the new test kits tomorrow, and take it from there. I would not add bulky pieces of shrimp that will basically rot away and stink.
If something is needed, just a tad of very tiny pieces of fish food spread out with the aid of the pumped water after the water is settled and tested tomorrow.
Ok, bedtime for me. :hi:

LOL...IDK JOE......you know....there very well may have been.....I do feed small frozen foods, and I would have to guess a lot gets sucked up in the filter
and who knows what was in the sand.....Maybe I should have rinsed it, BUT I THOUGHT I Needed whatever was in it YIKES
I'm not testing again tonight...BUT I AM ordering a new ammonia and nitrite kit tonight.....I already have a new nitrate one....

A rule of thumb I use to determine when to order new test kits is to replace them one year after opening them.

Well, that is bad news. No reliable test kits. You will need pH as well for the hypo testing. You shouldn't add the fish until you have these kits.

She is adding the shrimp only until she gets some kind of reading ammonia nitrites or nitrates then she takes it out. IMO she needs more than just a tad of tiny flacks to establish a thriving bio filter

Maybe I'm wrong but I do believe I have read this on this form but if one takes sand out of an established tank and put into another or newer tank, won't you be killing off the bacteris in the newer tank and get an ammonia spike, along with other spikes as well? People do suggest in doing this to kick start an initial cycle, right, or am I mistaken?

You know what...I DON'T KNOW ANYMORE

ALl I know is that on Friday....we are supposed to take the 54G apart to catch the goby.....that is my window of opportunity cause then my husband goes on nights...and we don;t have a day off (or even 1/2) for 2 more weeks....I can not even take the LED lights off this tank alone.......
we are going to pull the rock out and re-do the tank too before he goes to work Friday night
