Hi Celac- havn't seen it but I will check it out!! How is all with you?
Lisa- Just curious if you feed anything. I feed frozen cyclopeeze to the tank in general but do not dose any phyto. I had bought some awhile back for my feather dusters, but they were all lost one way or another.
I have read that refridgerated phyto is the way to go, or if you make finely processed homemade frozen food they can often filter the smaller particles of that out of the water. I found those articles interesting, glad you did too.

What is your daughter thinking of for stock? Does she want to go reef?

I am great! Umm, I got a new jawfish, after all 5 of the jawfish died that Drs sent me. I have decided that my tank will be a coral/pipefish tank. Also, I am getting a HUGE (huge for me) order in on friday I think.

LOL, every time I hear people say a bag of cheato, I think of the color orange!
Yeah, I LOVE inverts....might be why I wrote so many IOTM's?
Also, I FINALLY got some corals, it is this nice zoo rock, they are growing fast (I think), although the colors aren't stunning.

Ok, since I realized you are taking the time in the morning to read this thread, I decided I would put something worth taking the time...LOL
My tank is a reef/seagrass tank, it has caulerpa, but when I get more light after christmas, I am gonna get some stargrass.
Some time after that, I am gonna get some gulf pipes...yea, I know they are ugly, but they are supposed to be the easiest to train to frozen, besides l8er when I have some experience, I can get some harder/ prettier types, that can go with them.
Right now all I have is my jawfish, 3 asterea snails, some zoo's, caulerpa, and 2 emerald crabs, (one is hiding ATM)
Oh yeah, I also made some more DIYLR recently, I am gonna add it in a few more weeks, as a christmas present LOL

So, Celancanthr am I understanding correctly that you're starting up a pipefish/seahorse tank? I've been seriously planning on starting a nano pipefish/seahorse tank, probably within this year when I feel more confident in keeping everything in check. Also, I have a butt-load of research that I want to do before I even think about getting the equipment. It's going to happen, but it's going to take time.
I'll be interested in hearing about your progress!!

Hey lisa! I would love to do a seahorse/pipefish tank, alas this is impossible! At the moment, their are no CB pipefish, which means that to be able to have pipes, and seahorses, you would either have to get both wc horses ( which is not reccomended because of how difficult it is to care for them.) and wc pipes, or cb horses and wc pipes, which is almost as bad as the first, because the diseases that the pipes would bring in with them could easily kill the horses because they have no immunity to the diseases. It is just not something really safe until CB pipes are available. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

But you are welcome to pick my brain about pipes, or horses. Always happy to help.
I will be sure to keep y'all updated!

I was in a lfs last weekend that regularly has cb pipes and horses...that's why I was thinking it wouldn't be an impossbility for me any more. We'll see though

Celac- your tank sounds interesting, wish you had some picks. Sigh, I 'll live.
So I assume the jawfish will do well in that set-up?
How do you make your DIY rock? Are many of these critters you ordered going to live in the caulerpa and future sea grass? Are the ghost shrimp going into a fuge for the pipefish to eat??
Lisa- When I was setting up my 16 gallon my LFS was pushing for me to do seahorses but I wanted fish! Anyway, it is pretty neat that you can even keep seahorses if you ask me, they are tank raising certain species now right? They have the sea horses in these funky tall nanos, under 5 gallons but they are good looking. I would love to hear the info you gather for this new venture, I am always interested to learn something new. :joy:
Well on the home front DH and I are butting heads because I am half feeling as though I should get an Aqua Pod with Halide stock lighting and start a new tank rather than buy halides for the 16 gallon. He REALLY is not even humored by that talk.
I have a ways to go before I can make a decision since I can't afford a new fish right now- nevermind a new set-up. After tax-returns he better watch out though. :scared:
But the thing with a nano is it would for sure be my last tank and a part of me wants to hold out and keep the option of a larger tank open for "someday".

My frags arrived this morning, yipee!! Wishing I had a better camera right now, the ricordea pictured below (blue thing in the center near closed taod frag) actually looks pink under the actinics, showing blue in the pic though. :notsure: I also tried something funky today, I zip tied a zoa colony to a plastic power head component and hung it from the side of the tank. The zoos are not all open yet from their torture, but I think it will look neat once they spread out 360 degrees.

Monalisa> Are you sure that they are CB pipes? Are you sure they aren't TR? I am not doubting you, or even the store owner, but their has seemed to be a HUGE influx of "CB" pipes lately, coming from places that never had a pipe breeding program. If they came from out of country, do they have any CITES documentation?
Fishmamma> Christmas IS coming up, may be a good chance for a new camera!
Yeah, I have my lovely 6 inch deep sand bed. Oh, and I don't have a sump, but the shrimp are going into the main tank, since the jawfish, and pipefish will be to small to eat the full grown ones.
I used a bucket, and some sand for the mold, and I used a ratio of 3:7 (I think?) sand:cement

Celac- I though you had fuge or were planning on doing one (not a sump). My Christmas presents are already in the tank.
I took down the zoos on the clip and attached the toadstool frag instead to get it up closer to the light and out of the way. Hopefully it will grow faster if it gets more light? My large toadstool needs to slow down, it is taking over my tank but the little guy doesn't seem to ever grow. New zoanthids are looking good, very different coloring than in the photos under the 400 watt MH's but I actually love they way they look in my tank, hope they do not change colors on me.
You will have quite the time opening up all those bags on Friday, what fun!!! :joy:
Lisa- How are the frogspawn and gramma doing?

Cela, SEE!!! Now that's definitely the kind of thing I was talking about researching. I'm not planning on doing this all willy-nilly. What I saw at that lfs was a sign stating specifically that the horses and pipes were cb. What is TR?
I have a definite soft heart for seahorses and would never, NEVER put a little life like that in jeopardy...unfortunately I'm afraid I'm in the minority. My biggest...no, hugest scuba goal is to find a seahorse in the wild, and hopefully photograph it....ahhhh, that's good stuff!! Off to Cozumel in March, if I get that this forum will explode with my excitement!!!
FM, your tank looks awesome, you must be SO EXCITED about your new additions...I would be, and am. :joy:
My little gramma, recently named Prince William, but we call him Billie here at home, is doing great. I can't believe what an awesome addition he's been. The "girls" are accepting him, he's hanging out more and more with Bozo, and he's exploring the tank all over the place. He's also got his little cave that he sleeps in...heads there just 5-10 minutes before the actinics go off...oh here I go, I'm so happy with him
Took me long enough to find my final fish addition...

Sorry, TR=Tank Raised
Next time your there, couldyou ask the owner where she/he got the CB pipes? I am very interested. We aregoing to the keys on the 16th, and every winter that we are their, I always see ton's of gulf pipes, which I just love watching them. Also, the hurricanes probably stirred up some interesting stuff, which is always fun to watch. YOu wouldn't believe how much stuff got stirred up after on of the hurricanes in July. Have fun on your trip! Take lots of fish pics!
