According to Leslie Harris of the LA Natural History Museum the mystery creature is a terebellid polychaete. Apparently he has left his tube (someone mentioned this possibility earlier) and is in distress (duh! The tank is cycling, Hello?). She also thinks that the spikey thingy it expelled is some sort of parasitic pod (kinda large for a pod, no?).

I respectfully disagree with Leslie Harris.

Question: I have some sort of snail that is in a red and white swirl shell, about the size of a quarter and only comes out at night...any idea what it is?

Google "Trochus Snail" and "Astrea Snail" and see if either of the shapes match your snail. Those are the two most likely Genus for snails that size.

Hmm, it kind of looks like a trochus snail, but not that shape...and it has a red and white swirl shell. Do some snails only come out at night? Thanks for your help, by the way.

There are a lot of nocturnal snails. Trochus are usually eating 24/7 but maybe you have a unique species. I'd really like to see a picture because there are quite a few predatory snails.
Have you seen it on the glass? If so does it look like the foot has a line down the center?

I've never seen it on the glass...I've been trying to get a picture for weeks, it's a sneaky little bugger. Some are predatory??
And what's a foot?

A foot is 12 inches.
Sorry, it's the muscular part of the Snail that they use to crawl around on.
If you've never seen it on the glass then that reinforces the thought that it's predatory and not eating algae. Don't pick it up with your fingers until you send me a picture of it.
It doesn't look anything like this does it?

Yeah I was going to try and pick it up good thing I read this. It doesn't ever go on the glass, and no it doesn't look like that....god, where does it hide during the day?! It's creeping me out.

I had several LARGE *about the size of my fist * apple murex snails that hitched into my tank and hide for several months in my tank. its amazing what can hide and the size they can still hide at.

Bang, I got a picture (FINALLY) right when I turned the lights on this morning, here it is underneath some weird green bubble things...
It's not a very good pic, but it doesn't go on the side of the tank ever.

Banded trochus snail, next to valonia aka green bubble algae.
Course that's my guess but he sure is small
