yeah, but the thing is man, those are living things that you are gonna put through a serious amount of pain and possibly death if you are wrong, now, is that right to do that?

okay first of all... even if you can why would you risk putting those fish in that tank? most people have the patience to let the tank cycle with the live rock alone. that is what you are supposed to do. second of all if you really want to add fish to help the cycle add a damsel the hardiest fish there is. third if your going to add a fish to help the cycle you want to wait for about 4 weeks before you add the fish. i added my clown on the forth week of my tank being set up. as said before i hope you washed that tank out very very well!!! alot of things in salt water are very sensitive to chemicals and change in water conditions.

Again clowns are part of the damsel family, also hardy fish! Second, from the book I was reading said it was ok to add them, had nothing to do with patients.

why? your gunna be a lot happier with saltwater hobbie if you take your time and do it the right way. all to often people do it the wrong way and get mad when there tank crashes and give up when all along it was there fault.

and, no one uses damsels, unless its on the advice of an LFS lookin to make a buck, to cycle a tank, everyone uses a dead shrimp from the grocery store, its a lot easier an saferto do that, than to take a chance on killin a fish to cycle ur tank

That could happen Shy(the spike killing the fish and such), but you're halfway there and you have little to lose. I hate to see some nice phony clowns die, but don't get discouraged. I think you're going the right direction. I let my tank cycle for 5 weeks and the first four fish I put in (2 at a time-4 weeks apart) died.

Go look it up.
everyone on here will tell you the same thing shy, throw that book away, its an outdated book, using a damsel to cycle is kinda like using a dog to check for mines in a mine field

published or reprinted shy, and seriously, would u use a dog to check for mines in a mine field? its the exact same principle as using a fish to cycle a tank, if he lives, great, if he dies, you screwed up an killed a fish for no reason

they died because the tank wasnt ready for the bio-load of the fish. the cycle may not have been finished and that is what killed them. im not trying to be mean but i just feel like your not listening to any thing any one is saying and you think this book is just all knowing.

I think
it was because I was using NovAqua to treat tap water. the next painful lesson was not quarantining the fish. After the first 4 died, I put 2 in that survived and were doing great. I bought a Naso tang and put it n and lost the next bunch to ich. Like I said, don't get discouraged. Folks here are telling you the truth. Some folks get "animated" because they are trying to drive home a point, but they're trying to help you avoid what happened to me.
