Sure, I have seen many sumps/fuges with the pumps intakes covered in foam. Heck I have seen the whole pump wrapped in foam.
But it puts him in the same spot of wanting to get rid of the Bio Balls. Catches crap and puts out the nitrates.

Much easier to keep clean though. I think the real fix is to get the output of the skimmer into the fuge. This sponge on the pump would only be a temporary containment action to me.

just got back from home depot, the skimmer drainage is now going to the fuge, 1 1/4 elbow with a straight shot to the fuge, then another 1 1/4 elbow slanted so it doesn't blast my sand. Skimmer didn't over fill or anything, it has been working perfectly for the past 10 minutes so lets keep hope for the best

thanks for all the help and putting up with my slowness

You mean I have to work at cleaning bio balls for them to work as they were designed.
You mean I have to take the sponge out once per week and clean the accumulater shizzile off it to keep my nitrates from rising?
You mean I have to change the filter floss more than once per week or it will accumulate detritus to the detriment of my tank?
you know the "husbandry" issues.
