I would take it off and clean the whole wet site out. My hair clogs that stupid thing and I have to pull that out ever once in a while so I can only imagine what the starfish did to it today.
My husband said that if they're not perfectly lined up, it will make this noise. You're close since it's only doing it after an hour, but it's still not there. You need to move the outside one (where the motor is).

I did take it off.....there was nothing in it.....the starfish's leg is in the sand :( BUT I took it all apart anyhow.....after I put it back on (few posts above) it made the "vibrating" noise....after fudging with it I finally got the alignment perfect and that stopped.....this is a totally different whiny sound
I am out of things to try.....Right now I have it turned down I think it is 5 leds from full......I may call the company tomorrow....(and leave out the star issue)
I am going to go to TX again tomorrow though (get rid of those foster fish and some more kenya and leather frags) so I have to do whatever I decide in the a.m.
I do not want to go w/o a PH at all..........I am very very frustrated tonight ...I'm sure you can imagine

I know the feeling. I came home to my tank being electrocuted tonight
Gotta love crabs in the sump chewing through wires! I now have no skimmer.
I think it might be wise to call the company. I'd just run it on night mode for tonight, maybe it will work itself out. Are you sure nothing is damaged on the shaft? I have a spare wet side I could mail to you if you want to try that.

I forgot to ask, when it makes the noise, does it continue to work or does it stop?
It continues to work
Thanks for the offer, but I have barely had this a week.......I think if it continues I am gonna have them replace it. I did not see anything wrong to the eye....the pieces are teeny..LOL....
Do you think I should take the WHOLE thing apart....I mean teeny nuts and all (haha I see a joke there) Husband is working night shift tonight so maybe we can do that tomorrow

or Saturday.....tomorrow is gonna be a busy day for other stuff

LOL, let's hope Joe doesn't find that post..
I can't imagine that a starfish could do that much damage, but with this hobby, you just never know. I agree, make them replace it if you can't figure it out. I feel so bad :-(
*HUG*

No, I never have. I told my husband about your little adventure today and mentioned that maybe we should be using them, especially since my anemones are literally right in front of it and the one likes to climb up on it from time to time.

Well I put mine on tonight.....lol....BUT my husband says the star was stuck in the front of the MP40....I told him it probably entered thru the side
I mean HOW IN THE HECK would it get sucked in the front
...The star seems to be okay..SO FAR

I've had algae sheets sucked right in through the front, chopped up and spit right back out, so I could see a starfish doing that.
You have me panicking now. I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight, I just went and turned mine all the way down and put them in night mode, LOL.

I'm sorry :( How do you put it on night mode??

hold down set and mode at the same time until it starts flashing multiple colors, let go, hold down both again and you'll hear it lower in strength and the light will turn a pale blue, almost white in color and stays that way
*The pale blue/white will slowly change from dim to bright

Good News: Starfish should, in all probability, be fine. The cut didn't get his central disc and he should regrow the leg perfectly fine.
Bad News: I would definitely call on the MP40 and leave out the starfish problem. Might double check to make sure there are no remanents of the starfish inside in case they want the powerhead back for inspection. MP powerheads are very fragile and I would definitely use the foam sleeve all of the time. That's really the only downside to them. Even small changes can affect them drastically. They are amazing powerheads don't get me wrong, but they do have their small downfalls. Definitely call though and see if they will possibly replace the powerhead or at least identify the source of the problem. From personal experience they have great customer service and I would bet money that they will help you in fixing your problem or getting you a new powerhead.

Thanks Chain....It surprises me though that a $400+ powerhead would be "fragile"

I checked...there are no leftover pieces...as a matter of fact the other arm is laying in the sand :(
