My New 10 Gal Reef!

In time you might have a problem with your Xenia and Green Star Polyp choking out your other corals. They are fast growing and will take over anything like cud zoo. A lot of ppl like to put them separately in the sand because they don't like to touch the sand and wont spread. I personally Love GSP and have it all over my rocks. You can keep it in check by picking or cutting it off where ever you want. It wont hurt it and you can even glue it to plugs or rock pieces and frag them and give or sell them in you club. Some LFS will sell your frags for you and take in a 10% profit depending on the store. While you take in the rest. But that will probably come down the road for you. GREAT looking tank btw!! My friend has a 20L with PC lights and it doesn't look NEAR as good as yours! Good Luck

I know that there are big debates about which lighting is better for a coral reef. Now when I bought my pc's for my tank I was told by several people that I wouldn't be able to keep much of anything, much less have it grow. So, in the intrest of science and data gathering, I will post the results of my bubble coral after a few months in my tank. The first pic will be when I first got it, and the last two pics will be the same bubble coral 2 months later. Enjoy!
ps. to help refrence size, when i first bought it the coral was a little smaller than a tennis ball. Now it is the size of a grapefruit!

Sweet, you got pc's? I thought you had t5's. Most people say you can't keep things very good under pc's but my corals are doing great. Nice pictures.

yeah they are pc's i got t5's and pc's on the 90 gal. It is exactly that way of thinking that got me to put these pics up. I will continue to track the growth of my bubble coral just to see what happens. I've seen growth out of everything in my tank except the digitata (spelling?) but it's alive and the color is looking good so i'm not worried about it.

yes i have two frags of it. one has already grown and attached itself to the rock, but the other is just growing off of the "plug" and not attaching to the rocks. i think it's because i didn't glue them down and the snails keep pushing that one around. oh well! at leaste they are growing.

i dont comment much on other people's tanks except to say they look nice if they do. I'm not very experienced and i dont think my oppinion would count for much on anything but looks. lol.

Opinions, IMO, are valuable regardless of experience, so long as you present them as opinions. The folks who are inexperienced, but don't either know or care to admit it are a bit more problematic. those in this category who are then rude? A very big problem :) So in short, be polite and honest and go ahead posting your opinions. It is often participating in the discussion that we all learn the most.
Whomever discouraged you about PCs was wrong in many regards. While I think success with SPS is limited (except perhaps in very small tanks), soft corals and LPS can do quite well overall.
Heck, back in "the day" we actually used normal output fluorescents (shock!!!) and had success. In my first 15g tank I had two undercabinet normal output flourescents on the top with an actinic and 10K bulb in it. They were like 15W fixtures! I didn't have a thriving tank but jeez, things grew in there. Now you can't succeed even with PCs? that's crazy :)

thanks guys. that makes me feel alot better about posting in people's threads. i think i'll be talking alot more now.
about the pc thing... i totally disagree with alot of the hype on them. i'm not sure which of my corals are sps or whatever, but i do know which ones are thriving and which ones are just living. i'm thinking of experimenting with them. I have a t5 fixture on my 90 gal and pcs. so i think i will put the ones that arn't growing into there and see if it makes a difference under the different lighting. we will see.

dude, pcs are pretty good. ive had them on all of my earlier tanks, until i decided to go to metal halides. i guess since leds are becoming popular, they need to knock another light source off the line, and it so happens to be PCs. i was out of the hobby for a while, and when i came back in, i was shocked at how pcs had disappeared, and led thread began to spring up at just about every fourm, including a massive one in --. its been split three times due to its size!
anyways, PCs are good overall, but changing the bulbs get rather expensive, and the growth i was getting wasnt exceptional, so thats why i moved to MH. even if the bulbs cost around the same, more or less, you get phenomenal growth, and the cool shimmer. and paying 500 for a LED DIY or 1000 for the fixture just wont happen with me. i guess i'll stick to my 75 dollar MH DIY.... but dont get discouraged if someone puts you down for having pcs. ive kept clams under it with success. we're just old school like that...
btw, your tank looks pretty good. i gave up on my ten gallon right after the cycle because of school. lol
