One thing...when I was using that poly stuff, the water just went right thru it, none stayed in the filter tray...now the filter tray is full of water, BUT the water reaches across the whole tray...I am guessing t his is a good thing

I'm about a page behind inyour thread but I have another suggestion for optimun pad performance.
1. I found it better to put it in my tray on top of a plastic grate. This allows higher flow rate through the entire pad rather than just the holes in your tray under it. You just place this in the tray and it keeps a little space for more filtering capability. I can provide pictures tommorrow if needed.
2. Drill a couple of small holes on the side high upof your tray. Cut them so that if the water backed up too high; then the water would spill out of these emegency holes into the bottom ( refugium ) part. DON'T DRILL THE HOLES TO DRAIN OUT THE SIDE OF THE REFUGIUM !!!!

The build up is as the filter clogs and prevents more flow. Its taking alot of cr_a_p out of the tank though. With the emergency holes, even if they get completely clogged the flow into the refugium will continue and you will never have an overflow.

I should not have an overflow...I have a good 2 inches above the tray....Do you use these micron pads? Do you have to rinse yours daily??
Maybe I'll put a piece of eggcrate underneath...I'll mess with it tomorrow....

OK Joe, you can answer this in the morning when you get up...keep in mind I have off from work tomorrow so I will not be up as early...LOL
The phosguard and the pad says to put them in direct water flow...I put them on the pump side as you said to do....do I need to move them into the filter tray where the water is running in?

If you have them on the suction side of the pump the media is getting water drawn through them
