ok lets look at it this way. forget about the level in relation to your pump what you want to do is have the water level come close to the top on the right side BUT NOT OVER IT with your pump off

Well the middle and the right side stay the same water heights, the right side walls I guess you would say...are lower than the others...Here is a pic now

ok when you make more ro continue adding and turning off you pump check the level. you want as much as you can add with out overflowing your sump.
Then you can get creative with egg crate and bio balls over your return pump
Please remember this is YOUR SUMP/REFUG I am just suggesting ideas (but the added water is a must) with the added water you can go with a deeper sand bed on the left side

Ok BUT you understand the concept of adding water until the level from back flow from your DT comes close to the top but not over it in your sump when your return pump is off ?

Yes, I got it....If I lose power, I don't want too much water in my sump so that when the overflow box empties, putting water into the sump,(of course the sump is no longer putting back into the tank) the sump doesn't overflow all over the house...LOL
It's easier to think than to write down...LOL

BINGO it’s all down hill from here. Once you have the fail-safe volume of water in your tank you can work on tweaking your sump/refug to get the most out of it. What type of siphon brakes do you have?

GEE...Joe, I thought you knew everything...LOL...I have read quite a lot of your posts, and you seem very experienced...And I am ssure with your experience you have also suffered a lot of frustration.....I am only in my 8th month, and have made so many mistakes...mostly costly to me though, not the fish.

I know enough to know I don’t know enough about this hobby. If I don’t walk my dog now he is threatening to chew off my leg. The water level was a big step; I will check your posts tomorrow and give you some suggestions for egg crate and bioballs if you want. Have a good night my freind

Wow, Joe, this is interesting..... I read somewhere that Chaeto was the algae you could light 24/7, and caulerpa needed a diurnal cycle or else it would go sexual......maybe a different sp. of Caulerpa??
I have a big ball of chaeto in my sump that I've had lit constantly for the past few months, and it's only getting bigger. My pods love it, too. I'd love to hear why you think Caulerpa is better. I can find it down here in Fl. from time to time, so I have the option of changing out if needed.

Hey Nova....Just how much chaeto do you keep in your refugium? I have a tiny bunch about the size of a golf ball...and I also have some of that red macroalge about 2 small tennis ball size clumps...They sell chaeto by the handful, so I guess I should ask how many handfuls should I get...I can't find the caulpera...I habe no lfs to try either and none of my online sources carry it.

Caulerpa is faster growing then Cheato does better in refugiums that do not have a high turnover rate that Cheato prefers (tumbling) it will root (not really roots) to your sand or mud substrate (helping aerate it). You can feed it to your tangs they seem to love it. Easier to harvest.
24/7 lighting Is not the reason caulerpa will go sexual.Actually I believe I have read that there is some evidence that keeping caulerpa illuminated 24/7 will impede it going sexual. Of course keeping It illuminated 24/7 assures that it is kept in your refug

Excellent this allows you to go with a deeper sand bed on the left just have to come up with a way for it not to impact on your filter block

What looks like a white box on top of the egg create is that when the influent water from your DT gets to the sump/refug
