Yes, It is also where my filter pad is...Right now I have some poly fiber batting from the craft dept...LOL...I have to order some pads online.
So you think I need more sand?

Yes on the sand and the area where your return pump has some unutilized space if you are trying to squeeze every thing you can out of your system I would consider placing bio-balls there.

OK on the sand, I wasn't sure so I just put a small amount...I have a 4" sb in my dt so sand is not an issue.
So you are saying to throw some bio balls in tghe side with the return pump? Can they get stuck in the pump??

Ok try to visualize this in this picture look at the acrylic that goes from the blue block filter to the water line (I know it goes higher but just that size. Now If you got a piece of acrylic or glass that size and placed it to the left of the filter block and down to the bottom of the refug. (and silicone corked the edges. You can go with a deep sand bed with out impacting your filter block the water would be drawn from your return pump over the top of the acrylic or glass you just installed. Does this make any sense?

Yes, it does.....I don't think I have the material for that here though....I have a lot of extra glass from my lids I don't use, but no way to cut it....I will have to look around, or measure the size tonight and maybe buy a piece of acrylic tomorrow...
So should I wait until I can do this before I add any more sand?

Yes I would wait and before I got the acrylic go to your local hardware store and buy a glasscutter. They are under $5. Goggle cutting glass its real easy practice on a few pieces I am sure you can do it yourself. All you need it the cutter the glass a straight edge alcohol and a ruler If i can do it anyone can

I disagree with Joe about Caulerpa. While it will consume nutrients and grow quicker, it MUST be under 24/7 lighting or it could go sexual and pollute the entire tank. Chaeto is much safer and will still reduce the trates in your tank. I would add 20 lbs or so of LR rubble to the fuge part, along with some hermits and nassarius snails to dispose of debris. Also I'd keep a close eye on the blue sponge... if it gets clogged with stuff, you could have an overflow. Good luck.

THX...I can't find the caulpera anyway...I threw in a couple of pieces of small LR that I had laying in my tanks...I need to get more though...I have already cleaned the blue sponge once...I plan on getting another sponge so I can rotate as I clean....

no they should not get stuck just make sure they can not fit into the inlet side of the pump.
As far as the added deep sand bed. This is just IMO. As evident by the number of posts dealing with high nitrates you can never have enough denitrification

HUBBY wait a minute do you mean you are a woman,
all bets are off had I known you were a woman I would have asked you what you were wearing a long time ago.
OK OK before Sir Q sends me to time out let me just say yes if you can get it snug you will be ok or you can use an epoxy that you can apply under water. I know it is a lot of work but trust me it is worth it. How does your water level look in your sump/refug

Be still my heart, now lets look into what type of bio balls you can use. I think you will be very happy with the outcome of your sump/refug
