Wow, wow, wow! What an amazing experience. I went snorkeling a bit on my honeymoon in Maui and Kauai. We loved Tunnels beach the most. Renting the snorkel equipment was the best $20 that we spent there. But this was before I knew anything about saltwater fish. Now I can't wait to go back again!
But oh my - what an amazing experience for you campbell! Congrats!

I am glad you saw the post. It was truly amazing to catch this guy.
I love Tunnels beach in Kauai. There are also some really good spots in Kapalua. The best fish that I have ever seen though are on the big island. Due to the fact that there is little area for people to go to the beach and the fact that there is very little place for fishing, the water is pristeen and the fish are everywhere.
I saw thousands of yellow tangs just 20ft down. I also saw a ton (over 40) Achillies tangs just grazing on the live rock in various areas. The other cool thing that I saw in Kona was this Manta ray that comes to the shore to feed every night at my hotel. They put spotlights on him and you could see him cruize the surface for plankton. It was awesome!
I cant wait to go back in March.

Here is some recent pictures of my still favorite angel. The Emperor is getting even brighter with the new Spectrum pellets I have him on. Growing like a champ!

WOW, nice looking tank and stock. How did you get the angel home on that long trip? Hand carry?
Awesome.

Do you have a video of your tank? I would love to see the fish in action.

You are not allowed liquids...UNLESS it is a Pet. They are not allowed to deny pets on the plane. You have to be able to show the fish moving in the water and they have to be able to test the bag as well as the air. Some airports will even make you let them test the water.
The Honolulu airport opened the box, checked the fish, opened the first bag, swabbed the box and the bag and I was good to go.
The liquid limit is on things that are bottled. My fish was living and therefore, if there was any dangerous stuff in there, the fish would be belly up :)

Plus - I told them that I was bringing the fish through whether they liked it or not.

Somehow I don't see that one happening....You may have been posting from jail had you said that.

Interesting, I didn't realise this, no extra charge?

Wow. I didn't realize this!
And just wondering - are fish bought locally in Hawaii much cheaper than around here?
And did you have to show something showing that you had bought the fish from a licensed catcher like that fella?

If you think they'll deny you - fish in ziplock bag, stuffed down pants - keeps the fish warm too.

Its a good think that I wasnt bringing back a trigger or an eel

I actually did tell Luana (the TSA security manager) that I was going to bring the fish through regardless (kidding with her of course) and she laughed and said there wouldnt be any issues.

Nope. No extra charge. I already paid for the first class seat and checked my carry-ons so I had no issues.

Certian fish in Hawaii are cheaper. For example, any fish from Hawaii or Christmas Island are much cheaper. They have yellow tangs out ther for $19, potters angels for $30, Nasos for $40ish. But for fish that come from Indo, Caribbean, Africa, Australia are more. For example, Asfur angels (small) $275, Blueface Angel $275.
I didnt show anything that I had bought the fish. I told them I caught it. I do however have a receipt from Rob for my purchase
