I don't think Joe is Scary at all. For someone that hasn't read a post or two he may be a bit intimidating, but I for one Value the input of somebody with so much knowlege. Once you've read a couple of hundred posts you get a feel for who knows what. Anybody thats spent any time on here knows that Joe will be one of the first to tell you when you are right. And sometimes when you are wrong, which is quite often needed.

And let me add, that I saw this post, saw that it was posted by Joe, saw the number of responses and was looking forward to a new concept in either venting my aquarium and/or sump, and/or the need to vent my stand. Very disappointed that it was not.

Thank you thank you thank you I really needed to laugh

I know I wish I could have someone explain step by step how in the world you set up a mysis shrimp tank. because other than dumping some shrimp in and feeding them Im clueless. (And not because I have not searched through books and the internet but because I can't find the information.) Having this forum and not feeling like your going to be attacked over asking the basic questions is a key way many of us started in the first place!
This is a prime example of the kinds of questions that SHOULD be asked. It is 180 degrees from the question. "how do I know when my cycle is over" I just don't understand how someone can spend money on a hobby which we all know is not inexpensive and not take the time do their homework. I can understand someone coming to the boards and saying , I have done my homework want to start up my tank but I am confused about the cycling process.
The fundamentals of this hobby are not that hard to understand, to me at least the questions that drive me crazy are the ones that show absolutely no indication of research at all.
the Beatles said "all we am saying is give peace a chance"
All I am saying is" give a you tank a chance" Educate yourself FIRST then jump in.

Please review Joe's 12 gauge venting procedure posted earlier.

Hey Joe, my Feather Star is dropping feathers. How can I fix it?
Well Bang while I can not answer your question, I can say that they are extremely hard to care for and have a mortality rate that suggest that they should not even be sold in the trade. Seeing that you have one I am sure as a consciences hobbyist you did your homework on the feather star before you made your perches. Should not the question be directed to hobbyists that have in fact attempted to keep the feather star so you can exchange information as apposed to ok i have one now what do i do

Just so you know Joe, I would never attempt to keep such an animal.

Is it bad tat te most valuable information ive gotten from joe on this site pointed me to how to take my waste management can in the garage and use it for water and call the waste management office and tell them my can is missing?
While I havnt tried this method yet, i don't think that im above it LOL.
Joe wants to know how people would get into something like this without doing research. I can offer my personal story. while I didnt go in totally blind, i really had no idea about alot of the basics.
So my dad has had freshwater setups in the house since ive been little (im 33 now) and we always had tiger barbs and sword tails swiming around and I always thought it was cool. So now that im all grown up and have a house of my own, i wanted a saltwater system instead. So i went to the LFS to inquire, and of course they make it sound soooooo easy. Don't mention anything about a cycle. My dad to this day I doubt knows what a cycle is. Just dump the water in, dump the fish in and let er' buck. Now I will say that i ddint end up doing that myself, but only because i bought an established tank. Otherwise, i probably would ahve assumed that it was as easy as the LFS guy said it was and how easy my dad made it look. I really feel sorry for his fish now, we go round and round about the proper things to do in an aqaurium. his statement is always " you are going to beleive a bunch of yahoos on the internet over the guy right here in town that knows enough about this to successfully run his own store?
anyways. even though I bought an established tank i had an ammonia spike when i got it moved to my place and it cost me a sand sifting star and a turbo snail (luckily my lion that came with the tank made it). definatley would have lost my fish had it not been for the peeps on this board pointing me in the right direction. First answer " 25% water changes every day until the bad stuff is gone"
So, im not to proud to tell my story of extreme noobness and not doing nearly as much research as i should have. And i'm guessing if it can happen to me it can happen to anybody.
At least I can say that now I read so much on here and the rest of the web that I can answer most of the easy questions 4 months later. Im totally hooked, first thing i do every day is get on here and see whats new LOL.
sorry so long.

Oh and why not ? we are talking about something even the most seasoned hobbyist would have trouble keeping. As i am sure you know they are beautiful. But IMO the there are novice hobbyists and experienced ones as well buying them first with no a bit of homework,( that is why i am sure you would not attempt to keep one) is that at all fare to the feather star. I fear for the hobby if we encourage the mind set, fail first and learn later

BTW just out of curiosity how many noobs do you think have taken the time to read the great threads aimed specifically for them in the new hobbyist section

I read and read and continue to read. I'm on here every day reading. But I also ask A LOT of questions...as our lovely "masked friend" can attest too! That's how we learn. I look at everything on here as a "teachable moment."

well that makes you one up on me. Now if you explain to me why you told a hobbyist to use water from his DT when setting up a QT tank I will have learned something from you and we will be even*

This the #1 hit you get for setting up a QT tank if you google it. Since i cant use links here i'll just copy and paste his wording.
Quarantine Tank Setup
You don't need to go all out here. A simple tank size of 10 - 20 gallons will suffice for most people. If you have larger fish, then obviously you want to get a bigger quarantine tank. All you really need is a bare bones setup with the following equipment:
Some type of filtration (a hang on the back of the tank power filter will work, just use filter floss without the carbon since carbon will remove medication from the water, being counter productive)
Heater
A powerhead and/or an airstone for increased surface agitation
Aquarium test kits for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate
Fish Net - don't use the same net for your main tank
Fill the quarantine tank with water from the main tank and then turn everything on in the quarantine tank.
That among many other sites I used for reference.
