Hey flower, like the tank. Question ....how many times have you had baby horses? Do you keep them? Do they eat them? I know they have a lot at a time. Do you have to put them in a separted tank? I know nothing of sea horses but they are awesome. My daughter would love a shy, but I'm not so sure. Lol

Hi,
I don't have a set up for the fry yet...I'm planning on trying to raise them. The horses don't eat the fry..neither did my fish. They die, I don't ahev t5he food to keep them alive anyway. Seahorses are not any harder to keep than other fish...keeping the tank cool is the biggest hurddle.

I found the perfect filter for my sump...a little canister filter....It arrived today, it runs silent...stirs the sediment and removes it ... and sits in the stand space of 5 inches, it only measures 3-1/2" x 5-11/16" x 7" high. I only have filter floss in it to get the big stuff that would choke the pumps down there. I used a long tube for the return because the little spray bar it came with would sit too high out of the water and create splash. I didn't use the little hanger it came with. I think it will do me much better than a filter sock. The case is clear so I can see how soiled the floss is.
It won't fit in the 90gs sump space or I would order another one.

I turned on the lights this mornig to find babies everywhere. I watched for a bit as they floated around....I figured they would be sucked up by the filter. Well it's an hour later and while there are not as many, there are quite a few. Which tells me my filter system is not so good. I have the two bubblers going and breaking the surface...it keeps the baby horses pushed towards the front of the tank away from the filter overflow, then the little power head pushes them toward the left side of the tank to ride the bubbles again.....won't wasted food do the same thing?
A few of the babies managed to get into the little in-tank refugium...if there is enough copepods...can they live in there for a time?
On the other hand the water flow is exactly what I want to achieve in a fry tank...the babies are not trapped on the surface of the water.

yes they can live in there as long as there's food...if you can id take them out so you wouldnt have to worry about them being malnourished.

Dearheart...those little babies were doomed. I don't have baby brine shrimp and I think copepods were too large for them. At this moment the fry are all gone...even what had escaped to the fuge. Someday (maybe soon) I want to set up a fry tank....

Augh, sorry to hear this. Yeah, without an actual fry system set up with bbs ready, the little buggers are pretty much doomed.

Well the space I was thinking of using for a fry tank may be used to hold another new addition to my household...a cockatoo named Rodney. His owners are elderly and are going to live in a assisted living facility this week. They can't find anyone to take Rodney, so I told them I would. I pick him up today, I have to find room for his big cage. I don't want to put the birds together just yet...I want to make sure Rodney is healthy for now and not make Jelly sick. Then later I want to take it slow and see if he can be buddies with JellyBean. An Amazon and a Cockatoo....both are males, I don't know if they can ever be together. Jelly turns 5 years old this Mothers day, I don't know how old Rodney is yet.
Sam, the fellow who sold me my potbelly horses, had a net in his main tank...the net had weights on all four corners that made the net kind of hover in the middle of the tank. The fry would hitch to it. He did that he said because of the need for the chiller. He said the fry are kept from being trapped on the top of the water and not be sucked into the filters, he said they are .5 at birth...that's huge compared to the fry of the Kuda. He lets the fry remain with the parents that way until he puts them in another tank to grow out later. I have never heard of such a setup, but he said he has been doing that for 10 years and has about 70% survive.
Considering how slow my filters suck up the Kuda fry in that tank ...I'm wondering if I could rig something up simular for those little guys to cling to and not get sucked up, if I can get enough BBS...what do you think?

I want pics of the cockatoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think you could definitely come up with a setup similar to what the guy selling the pots does.

Okay...This is Rodney the bareeyed cockatoo. He is 13 years old and is super tame and we made friends right away. He has peach on his crest, and around the beak and eyes, his tail feathers have yellow on the underside. I did a little reading, he will get no larger than my Amazon, JellyBean. Of the cockatoo group this is the best talker and the most intelligent. Rodney speaks almost as clear as JellyBean and he knows how to wave and dances if you sing to him.

Thanks, for the words of encouragement.....Sams method does sound promising...I'm going to look for the right mesh and experiment on getting it to hover mid tank. Then work on getting the BBS hatchery set up...maybe by next brood I can try and save some baby Kudas.

Rodney is GORGEOUS!!!!!!! I would love a cockatoo, but I don't have the time to have one. They need lots and lots of attention. Good luck with the new addition.

Thanks...those naked eyes take a little getting used to...however...being a boy parrot with peach on his crest...looking like a little bruiser helps his image...LOL
Yes, I read they are very demanding pets. I am home most of the time so we should get along just fine. He really likes Mother. From what I read, the bareeyed cockatoos are more able to occupy themselves and not scream when they want attention...we shall see. I needed another bird like a hole in my head, but I have the time and Jelly might enjoy a companion from across the room. His elderly "parents" asked for visiting rights...they will miss him. I don't think a bird is all that hard to keep, and those homes should allow them. It just seems such a shame to break up a happy family.
My oldest granddaughter is JellyBeans godmother, I guess I will ask her sister if she wants to be godmother to Rodney...being so young, I'm sure both birds will out live me. A friend of mine has a Macaw that is 104 years old, her name is Dolly and she has already out lived two owners. The Amazon has a life span of 80 years, and the bareyed cockatoo 60...in a perfect world and they stay healthy.

Update:
I purchased a new skimmer and it's arriving today. I went with an Odyssea brand in-sump with needle wheel pump, for up to a 75g...that's about how many gallons I have with the sump. It's a cheap one but it got 4 stars on the review scale...LOL...the last one had no brand name to even check. Fingers crossed. Some reviews say it a good one, and some say it's a piece of crap....we shall see. I am still trying to revive the Tunze nano skimmer....the pump is running and makes water ripples, but no tiny bubbles so no foam.

Sounds like the venturi tube has been disconnected from the pump, or else is completely clogged. You can take this apart from the bottom, but BE CAREFUL not to remove the tube from through the guide hole at the top of the skimmer (old memory here, but I *think* the pass-through hole for the tube is near the top. I learned this the hard way, it is a SERIOUS PIA to get the tube back through that hole. On the other hand, checking to see if the venturi tube is still connected to the pump is an easy matter.

Scratch that....the hole the tube passes through is midway thru the body, which explains partly why it was such a mofo to thread through again. Told you. Old memory.

Okay...here is my serius problem...the skimmer used to push bubbles out of the top and bottom because the flat end pieces would not stay snapped together....so I glued the top and bottom pieces on with crazy glue gel...now, like the idiot I am, I can't fix anything. The gel may not hold that tight on coral to rock but it really sealed the plastic to plastic. I'm kind of hoping at this point that soaking in vinegar will make it brittle so the glue will just snap off...but not so far.

Super glue will release easier when subjected to moderately hot temperatures -- say, boiling water hot. Get a pot of boiling water going, dip the bottom of the skimmer into the water for a few seconds, then give it a good firm tap.
Trust me, I've disassembled my share of models this way. Superglue is inherently brittle, and usually the shock of impact will let it release due to shearing forces, but if it's been really well glued then the boiling water usually helps. Just be sure you don't keep it in so long that it might ruin the motor!

Ah...a plan, thanks. I will try it tonight.
I have to go to the LFS for some mysis shrimp. Let me ask you..
.I had:
5 Blue reef chromis
Lemonpeel Angelfish
Orchid dotty back
2 perc Clowns
1 very large LMB
Feather duster
2 serpent stars
About 200 assorted snails, and hermit crabs.
4 inch yellow lacey leather coral.
3 stalks if Kenya tree coral
Frag of bubble coral
I know that I can't get what I paid for my critters because I pay retail and the LFS buys wholesale....The LFS gave me $75.00 in store credit. I feel I should get more. Not that I have a choice, no other fish store around me would give me anything. They would take the critters off my hands but nothing else...but $75.00??? Seriously.

Mine gave me 50% of the current value IIRC. In other words, the $20 fish I bought as a baby that they would now sell for $35....I got $17.50 credit. Your list there seems like it would be worth a bit more than $75, but that's just my opinion. For the fish alone, maybe. But not for all the other stuff.
