New Seahorse tank Diary

TeresaQ, The one I have, I do like it, that was my original plan.
Now I'm afraid it's to big and won't skim right..it says up to125g but the low number isn't there. I have it on a 90g tank and this new one is for a 30g tank
I was told if a skimmer is too oversized it won't skim right.
Meowzer, I don't like CPR skimmers. Not even for $10.00 Once I get burned I'm done with that product.
The AquaC EV120 says 40g to 120g...so I thought it would be able to take care of a smaller tank. So I was planning on going with that.
Just like the 90g...The skimmer is my filter..nothing else is in the sump except a refugium and it is mostly for copepods and other yummy critters. So it has to be a good one.

Thanks..Excellent price too. Do you have any experience with this, or were just looking and came across it? I added the site into favorites..I'm planning to purchase at the end of the month if possible.

I haven't used one yet no...I was turned on to them by the people at my local reef store and they recommended them to me. I did a little bit of diggin on them and found that SWC (salt water connection) is a canadian based company. Coralvue (who makes the octos) is an american based company but they both use the excact same manufacturer overseas to build the skimmers. They are essentially the exact same skimmer body with different pumps. One brand is marketed to americans and the other canadians. I was actually thinking about getting one of these instead of the Super Reef for my own tank. It's only a few extra bucks for the shipping but it wasn't bad at all when I looked into the price for the one I wanted.

Flower, you havent posted all week. how is the tank. Are you ready for CUC yet.
T

Hey..it's only been a few days.
I got my Corey gizmo today. So I'm ready to hook up the new sump, I need one more trip to the hardware store and I will be all set, my gizmo is a little short. Corey sized it for 30 inches, it's a 30L tank and I need 36 inches..it's an easy fix.
I have no algae bloom yet so the CUC won't have anything to eat, so I'm still waiting before getting them. I'm hoping to get a skimmer by the and of the month. At the moment the tank is still on life support from the Fluval canister filter. It will be great to have the sump all set.

one good thing, with such a small tank, it wont make that big of a differance if you get your skimmer yet. I didnt run one for a long time.
Have you seen an ammonia spike?

Yes ammonia was 2.0, then Nitrites were off the scale high and ammonia read 0, that was about 2 weeks ago. I haven't tested since because I knew it was cycling, which is all I wanted to be sure of and then turned my attention to other things, like getting the sump up and going.
I don't understand how I could go without a skimmer. It’s really the only filtration. The sump just moves water from the DT through the refugium and then back to the DT. The skimmer is the only water purifier. I could continue to run a canister until I got a skimmer, but really think I will just wait until I have my whole system up and going before I get the horses.
I will purchase the skimmer next, and then get some decent lights and corals that make good hitches. Once the whole thing is up and going I should see some algae. Then I will get a CUC. I’m a tiny bit nervous about putting horses in such a new tank. All the books say a mature tank, and a mature tank is 6 months to a year.
I was thinking I could at least put some kind of seahorse friendly fish first and see how it does, what do you think?

Well, All I can do is tell you what I did. if you feel more comfortable with a skimmer, then you do what you want. As far as reading books on seahorses, there arent really any good books out there. Reading around the other seahorse site and asking questions there is better then any book you could read. I my self and lots of other certainly didnt wait 6 mo to a yr to add our horse. lol

Well The new sump is online. No skimmer yet, but I do have the refugium going. All three chambers are looking like they should. Did I mention this is a pain in the butt…My hands are so weak I had leaks everywhere but I finally got the clamps tight enough. I just added sand to the refugium so things are a little cloudy in my pictures.

What really burns me is a stunt the CPR Company pulled. It says on the description that the hook ups are ¾ inch. I made sure everything on my end, hoses clamps everything was ¾ inch. Well the bulkhead for this overflow was 1 inch…an adaptor sold separately to make it ¾ inch OPTIONAL!!! Where does it tell me that..inside the box, in the instructions!! What a bunch of crap. I would have made all my hoses 1 inch..I would have had better flow. I wasn’t about to go and order an adaptor from them just for the principle of it. I didn’t want to purchase new hoses or clamps, so I went to the hardware store and got a rubber piece made for dishwashers to adapt it, and using a piece of PVC and glued it to the bulkhead just like Corey showed me on my first one…and I fixed it myself.

And my new Corey Gizmo has plenty of flow, the Top has a nice ripple and I have nice gentle current flowing without a power head. I had the Eheim pump knob ½ way but the overflow couldn’t keep up so I turned down to ¼…I really like this brand of pump and the CPR overflow that holds the siphon makes this a truly carefree system. Here are some pictures, excuse the water drips I just got done..LOL..Cleanup is latter after a break.

Over all picture of my new sump up and running

My shut off valves

The very back..showing my rubber adaptor and what can be seen of my Corey gizmo

The only thing that can be seen in the tank is vertical spray bar and the overflow, very uncrowded.
View of the top spray bar

A full top view..So you an see how well Corey's Gizmo works..

Fantastic Flower - you are a sump/fuge expert now. Looks really good, good thinking with the rubber boot, make sure it is on good. Nice ripples on top of the tank. My 65 upgrade is going to have vertical spray bars as well. Look forward to seeing this one done with horses in it. I love horses, swimming and running kind.

Well I’m no expert..Corey had to help select a pump and overflow for what I need and I copied his design from my other sump that everyone help make...
LOL...I was proud of my silly self concerning that boot. (hardware man helped me) It is clamped real good and tight on both ends, plus I I had to run it under hot, hot water to even get the pipe on it. I angled the vertical spray bar towards the center of the tank, with the top bar pushing center and the vertical going the opposite direction it makes a pretty good current without blowing too hard. And it doesn't look to bulky in there either, I hardly notice that bar in the corner and once coraline gets to it..I won't see it at all..

Looks good, Flower! How long does it take for the system to stop draining when the power is cut? The drain should work fine, maybe for a future upgrade going to 1" wouldn't be such a bad thing. One of the little tricks I use when putting those hoses together is the hot water/soaking the hose and I also dab a little bit of dishsoap on my finger and smear it around the barb fittings and just a little bit in the pipe. It makes sliping them togher a heck of alot easier and the soap doesn't hurt it's such a tiny amount. I might put a clamp on the drain hose where it connects to the barb fitting below the boot. But everything looks good, nice work!

I had to look to see where you meant..That is a Y connector..It would be a pain to get a clip on there now, the two hoses split at that point, too hard to reach.. that connector is is in real deep 1 1/2 inches and no leaks. So unless I have a problem I'm not going to mess with it...If have to get in there for something I might try and get one on there for good measure. The main center one has a clamp where it feeds into the rubber boot.
I was thinking cooking oil but changed my mind, I would be too freaked out to try soap. I did use the hot water trick. The system shuts down in a heart beat, the water in the sump raises about 3 inches and it starts back up just like the 90g. the overflow kicks in as soon as the pump sends enough water up the pipes, just a fast.
I'm supper happy with it, Now to get a skimmer on there and my filter system is complete. Oh and I still need to get some rock for the fuge, I only have sand in there right now.

LOL..I missed this post. Yes it is pretty stark in there. I was wanting some good coral hitches, but that is a new nightmare with current and temp issues. It doesn't look like the horses are compatable with really anything.
I don't want to order any Macroalge until I'm ready for the CUC, so I can get it all on the same shipping order...I used my 1400 reward points for CUC critters and I will need a llive goods order to get it shipped to me. Not to mention I need a $100.00 worth of goods to get a break on shipping as it is.
So looking at SWF coral and maybe
a seahorse safe fish...what should I plan on getting..any suggestions?
