New Seahorse tank Diary

Purple Firefish?
Twinspot goby for the sand bed...
Clown goby or a couple barnacle blennies for fun...maybe Bangaii cardinals?
You could go for some branching sponge if you're worried about coral light requirements... or you could attempt some of the "hardier" non-photosynthetics like orange finger gorgs...
I think if you stick with macros, a low-level photosynthetic gorg like a Silver Muricea, and possibly some artificial hitches that can be easily removed and cleaned, you should be in good shape.

I will have to get out my book, the only fish I recognize is the firefish. My tank is too shallow and open for one of those little flyers. I don't want anything that digs or my hitches won't stay put, are any of the gobies mentioned diggers?
I have the sump going... but I just hooked back up my canister until I get a skimmer...I hate a cloudy tank and after all afternoon the tank wasn't clear from adding sand to the new fuge.
Gorgs are a pain...some nice tree sponges will work. Fake corals look so ..well fake. I have't found anything that suites me...that's why the tank is empty. I wasn't ready for corals or sponges and I can't find anything fake I like. Nor have figured out a way to make that fake cup coral more shallow so I can use as a feeding station.
Well tomorrow is another day..I have to get going and get dressed for work...Have a good night all.

ohhh I know lots of things that could go in lol.
Bangaii -in stock
pj cardinal - in stock
clown gobies- they have yellow and green in stock
neon gobies - in stock
zebra gobies - in stock
also fire fish
Of cource not all these can go in - you need to pick one or two. lol
Gobies are small so you could do a cardinal and a gobie
then once tank mature - add either a mandrine or scooter - you will have a nice fuge going
Feather dusters
Leathers - tree - finger -- toadstool -- all in stock
Colt - in stock
Kenya
Star polyps
Common mushrooms, - I would cover that back wall with all differant colors. lol
Florida Rics - on the wall too
Xeina
A couple of pepperment shrimp

Feather dusters, I had forgotten about those. They will look really good. I have some corals I can transplant from my 90g. Since I have the tank cycled, the sump up and the canister filter going (until I have a skimmer) ...I can add some things.
I know the mushrooms are Okay under fish lights. I have true blues and Green metallic, they will spread fast and are the perfect thing for the back wall.
So add a yes or no if these can live under fish lights, I have some I can relocate but I need to know about the lighting.

  • Kenya tree
    Green star polyps
I also have an orange tree sponge, about 3 inches big now and a perfect hitch, it is pretty old and for the last 6 months it has been shrinking, not enough food I guess. The problem is that it’s attached to a huge rock in the center of my 90g. Can it be cut? If I cut it at the base will it re-attach to another rock?
I am going to get out my book and check out the fish you mentioned, I have never had any of them except the fire fish. I also would like to have a couple of cleaner shrimps instead of peppermints...are they okay?

i second the catalina goby. I have tried and tried to get one of these for my wife, but I just cant make it work because of the cooler waters they need.
As far as hitches, its best to get things alive than to use fake hitches. Aside from the looks, any algea thats alive will be removing the nitrates from the system. If it were warmer, I would lop off some of my red algea and send it to ya for growing. It certainly seems that my red algea will grow anywhere with any lighting. I didnt know this, but I have a huge piece growing under a rock, LOL.

The only sponge I've ever owned that actively attached after fragging was Blue Halciona, and it's a notoriously difficult sponge to keep. Needs feeding.

not sure what you mean by fish lights, regular florescent??
Catalina are very cold water, and if you aren't running a chiller it wont work. They are beautiful, but cold water species.
Check the compatibiliy chart that Nova posted, try to stay with a 0 or 1
no on the cleaners, they tend to freak out the horses when they try to clean them, lol peps are better, they cleanup any left over food.

Live is always better, but no always doable. Catalina Goby is out...I just looked it up, it's a digger and requires a deep sand bed so it can make burrows. minimum tanks size is 55g..which sounds strange since the fish is only 2.5 inches at adult size.
Most if not all gobies are diggers.

I had some panda gobies in my dwarf tanks for many years. Since I have been back from MA though, I haven't found any otherwise I would have them now. They are cute little guys, although they can be a little reclusive until they are really comfortable.

This 30g tank came with a hood and light, the kind used for freshwater fish. I will change the lights to the T5s you found but not right away. Budget demands small purchases and in order of necessity, so the skimmer will be next on the equipment list.
This tank is small enough to us an icecap chiller from Coolworks like Nova was messing with. I don't think I will need one, in my room the tank never gets warmer than 75 but it has dropped to 71...I was thinking to regulate it, I wold need a heater set on 73 to 74, that would keep temps from jumping to too much of a swing.

check scissor tail and zebra gobies, that aren't diggers. I always liked my yellow and green clown gobies, they were always curious.
your not going to find many bigger flashie fish that are a one or two. Most kept with horses are small and kinda shy. Though my scooter blenny is all over the place.
I also have a jawfish, but you dont want diggers.

Well I just went through the list of compatible fish. I don't like any of them...they look like freshwater fish...blah. Maybe it's my mood. The pipefish, and the mandarin are nice but need lots of copepods so maybe later on...

I looked them up...1.5 inches...and the fish looks blah. Could I be more of a butt while you to try and help? I'm going to seahorse section and see what is on the list...and go through each one.
You are a butt head...LOl
Personally I love the clown gobies....the yellows have perky cheeks, the green has neat stripes, and the citron has a cute personality as it sticks itself to the side of the glass..LOL
I forgot about the zebras I also have one of them in my 29G.....it will find a cave under a rock in the sand...doesn't dig it out too much though, just enough for it to be comfy...

no pipefish. cross contamination with wild stock.
How can you say Banggai or PJ cardinals look like freshwater fish. I have never seen any like them lol. Look at the captive breeding forum. Someone just posted a pic of a daddy Banggai.
I have a PJ - really cool with lots of differant colors.
Purple firefish are beautiful.

I agree on the firefish -- purple or red, really. My red firefish had all sorts of irridescent colors to him along his flanks. Was never really the same color twice. Word of warning, though: Make sure you have a hood of some sort...many fish that are compatible with seahorses are also notorious jumpers, firefish included. Much to my chagrin the day I found mine crispified on the floor.
