I'm going to get the anthias from my LFS; he thinks he can get some in next week's order. I don't feel comfortable shipping these...unless I see SWF get them in, since it's FL shipping I think I might be OK. I'm going to get either two females or one male, one female....depending on temperament and coloration. And of course....if they are eating.
I'm home early today. Not feeling great. Tank looks good, gonna start testing this evening. I used 1/4 cup ammonia to kick start.

Today's ammonia reading: .75 mg/L.
I'm guestimating. It's darker than .5, but not at 1 yet. Debating on whether I should add more ammonia or let it go at this point.

I spent this afternoon with my hands in the tank, rearranging and replacing powerheads and messing with the rockwork a little bit. Here's what I wound up with:

I replaced the large flat rock that was connecting the far left and middle columns with something that was a little more visually interesting, a piece of lace rock that has a million nooks and crannies. The thing is...I'm still not sure I like it, or if I should just remove it completely. Do you think the left hand side looks too crowded? It's hard to tell since that's the dark side of the tank, but I'll reconsider when the main lights are in place.
I also replaced the constant-on powerheads with those two Evo's I was talking about, and wired all 4 onto the wavemaker. I also moved them slightly so they're almost all invisible - the two on the left are still behind the rockwork as before, and I hid the one in the middle so it's peeking out behind the upper middle column. The only really obvious one is that 1400gph pump on the right, but I wanted to make sure it was shooting a clear flow across the tank there...and it doesn't look too terrible anyway. Keep yer fingers crossed, I think this might have solved the sand issue as well.
I couldn't just leave that huge flat rock behind, so I relegated it to the sump for now. It will still make a fantastic piece of filtering rock in the future, no reason to waste it.

Personally, I don't think that it looks too crowded - and in fact, I think it would look good with a bridge between the right column and the middle one... I dunno. It's tricky in these large tall tanks to get the aquascape just right.

You wanna hate me?
Personally I see what your doing here but for some reason to me I feel it;s off balance. Too much on the left side and little on the right.
Now, once it gets some corals on there I'm sure it will look amazing, naked rock is never appealing.
I will have to stare at it for a few to get the mojo going.
I do LOVE what you did with the powerheads though, your a genius!!

I wouldn't hate anyone for suggestions!
Seth, you and I are sort of on the same train of thought. I moved it earlier to look like this:

I'm still not sure, but I'll let this sit for a day before I futz with it again. Michelle liked the fact that it looked precariously balanced (it's actually not) with that space between the rock on the right bottom. Personally I feel like I lost something by hiding that deep valley between the columns.....the blue space there had an infinite feel to it...at least to me. If I move this again, it will be to move the columns and settle the rock all the way down to the sand bed back there.

I definitely like the last design/rock arrangement a lot more than the previous ones.
I still think there's something missing though. Maybe its the coral!

I think the feeling you are getting is because the light is only on one side of the tank. I like the rock work as it is now. Maybe tilt that bridge rock downwards a little more to maybe flatten it out - and then you could see more negative space. I think if you put it on the sandbed, you will be taking away from the negative space on the sand and it would look off. But, I'm not the one that has to look at it every day. :D

Hope you're not getting tired of the rock arranging pictures. Here's one more. I think I'm getting closer now.

It's hard to see form this angle but the rock is still canted so it bridges the two columns (just lower down) and leaves a cave. I feel like I'm almost at it....but I may leave it alone until I see the light over the whole tank. Seth has a point, it's naturally unbalanced with the light and dark side the way it is now.

I think it'll look good with the current rock arrangement with all the lights.
We're not tired of the rock arranging pictures!

I think that one looks good. Either that one, or the one previous. I think what is really throwing you off is the lighting. But, that's just my opinion.
Just don't settle. :D

LOL thanks for putting up with me! I think I'm going to leave it like this, at least until the lighting is more even.
