Man... that sucks... I'm sorry to hear about your mandarin... I saw that he was awesome looking fish from your seahorse tank thread...

Yeah, he was a cool little guy. He'll be missed.
I just got back from the LFS again. The kid who does the water fills is starting to get a hunted look in his eye when he sees me...this is the third day of 30g fills for me, and he's probably tired of doing all that at once. At least it was quiet in the shop when I got there today.
I also got a small 1-lb piece of corraline-encrusted aquacultured LR with a nice little Caribbean green rose coral on it. These are pretty sturdy, and stands a good chance of surviving the cycle. I really just wanted it for the coralline and to help kick start the bacteria. Everything in this tank is base rock or dead sand, so we're starting pretty much from scratch here. I might get another...there was a nice 2-is lb piece as well....but I need to make sure I'm not loading my tank with rock and cutting down the swimming room!

Lol at the haunting look.
sounds good on the rocks!!
if you need some chaeto down the road, let me know. I will save some for you.
I have been giving them out for free for my reef club lately lol.

Thanks, Krista! Glad you liked it. Richard, I just might take you up on that. I have a small ball of chaeto in the 20g right now, but if it doesn't grow quickly (or if I'm impatient!) I might ring you up.
Tank's filled.

The new piece of LR is also in there, but you probably can't see it from this distance. I also added about 3lbs of medium-grain arragonite to the refugium. The substrate in the DT has no buffering capacity at all, so I'll need to test my Kh regularly to make sure we're OK in that regard. I thought it wouldn't hurt to add a little arragonite to help buffer a little. That section is pretty cloudy as you can see.
Y'all are probably wondering what's up with the light. Well, obviously I don't have my LEDs in yet - not even ordered. Need to save a bit for that. In the meantime, I have an old 96w compact fluorescent over one side, just so I can see in the tank if for no other reason. I'm hoping I can order my lights in a couple weeks.
Finally, I need some advice I just dug out two Koralia evolution 750s that I didn't even remember I had (that's bad, but we won't go there...). So I have the option of removing those two constant-on 850s and replacing them with the 750s on a timer. That would cut the flow down a lot, though, so I don't know. If I keep the old ones, I'll have 1700gph plus one 1400gph one at any one time, so 3100gph in powerheads. If I replace them, I would only ever have 2150gph in powerhead flow...but it would all be alternating. Any opinions? I can ALWAYS find a use for extra powerheads, but I would like some ideas about how much flow I should be looking at with the tank itself.
Oh, yeah, I forgot: I was pretty close in my estimate for water. It took 80g of water in the tank+overflow, and the last water I had (19g) is in the sump. I need a gallon or two more, but I think it's safe to say that this is a 100g actual volume system. At least it makes things easy for additive calculations.

No problem. Give me a week or so. I just bagged this guys one bag today and by end of next week, I should have another bag to spare lol.

Ha.
Ironically, no. While I have no objection to it whatsoever, I almost never imbibe. We're talking once a few years or so. I just don't personally see what all the big deal is with it. It's fun stuff, I suppose, but...eh. My "allowance" gets spread out between this hobby, a sci-fi addiction, and all the little home upgrades I'm doing.
This paycheck's tank allowance is going towards the water (paid), a piece of LR seed (paid), and a pair of Anthias if my LFS can get them in (pending). I need to go get more water tomorrow to help treat the tank the chromis are in.....one has lympho, there's a video in the disease forum....so there's more money down the tubes.

Whenever someone says "down the tubes" I always think of George Carlin. RIP.
Anyways, yeah, my "allowance" every week for my tank right now is $1.75 and that is for top off water. :( I can't wait to start making some more money.

By the way, I know that my avatar hints at herbs as well - but I've never been into that sort of thing. Although, I don't have a problem with it either. I just like Jeff Bridges in that movie.

Today will probably be the last of the water additions. More empty jugs in the back of my car, ready to be filled. I got the handles on the access panel last night, but I need to cut the screws down with my dremel since it's such a thin panel. Might do that tonight.
Feel like the wind's out of my sails right now. My male mandarin, the big dude I've had since 2009, went to that great big fishtank in the sky last night. I don't know how old he was when I got him...he was a pretty big guy....but I think he got sick from something. He had slowed down a week ago, stopped swimming all over. Couple days ago he stopped eating and it was downhill from there. I had a feeling he was on his way out yesterday, but I was still hoping he could pull through.
Sorry... no one likes to lose their favorite fish... or any fish for that matter :(

Tank looks great filled. See, Krista didn't think you had a head cold!

Why not get a smart wave? I have one and yes..... I LOVE IT and as do my corals.
Look it up and think about it a bit. Well worth the 59.00 bucks

I'm even looking up what a smart wave is...

Actually I already own an Ocean Pulse. It's almost the same thing; came out a little before the Koralia version. The negatives on the OP are the proximity of the outlets to each other, making it difficult to plug in splitters, and the lack of a fish feed option. I have it plugged into a switched outlet on the surge protector, so that eliminates the problem with the fish feeding, and I can use 3-way extension cords to make the connection for 2 heads per outlet. It's not as pretty, but it works just as well and it has the distinct advantage of being paid for.
Keifers, you think I should swap out my constant on K3's and replace them with more alternating pumps? Do you think 2150gph (plus the return) is enough flow? This tank certainly isn't SPS dominated, but it will have SOME SPS in it.

I beleive it wouldn't hurt to try it. Are you looking for a Tsunomi? Lol....
I have the gentle/moderate flow, just enough to wave the corals back and forth.
In your reef the 2150 should be good.

I'll give it a shot. No harm in changing them out, after all. Thanks for the input.
I just got back from the store again. 20g of water should be the last of it - 10g for a seahorse WC, 5g for the last of the big tank, and 5g new plus 5g from the horse WC so I can do a 10g WC on the QT tank. I checked with the guy who orders the fish, and he said there MIGHT be some Evansi's in stock next week....so I guess I'd better set up my second QT tank. LOL. Need to hide this one in the guest room so the wife doesn't see it right away....
