Novahobbies official 110g rebuild thread

Geez. I don't know what the heck happened while I was gone yesterday, but when I got home late last night I went straight to bed, didn't check the fishtanks.
I checked them this morning. Seems like my QT systems decided to go to hell in one glorious 24 hour period. My PBT has a fantastic coating of white spots again, even though the frelling tank is down to 1.008. She's also very pale and stressed looking. I checked the pH, which is in range at 8.0, and the amm and trite is all 0.
The 12g tank houses my McCosker's and Midas. Or rather, housed. I don't know what went on while we were gone yesterday, but I found my McCosker's on the sand bed, fins shredded, gasping for breath, and so pale he almost seemed like Casper the near-death McCosker. First thing I thought of was ammonia poisoning, until I noticed the Midas looking perfectly normal. I tested anyway. Ammonia WAS present, but barely above the 0 reading....certainly not enough to kill in 24 hours. I scooped up the wrasse and, not knowing what else to do, plunked him into the Anthias 10g tank. No acclimation, no floating in a bag, just scoop and plop. He really looked like he was minutes from the great toilet bowl anyway, so I didn't think this would make it worse.
The wrasse is still alive. Not moving much, but he IS getting some color back. He's making a slime coccoon right now for nighttime, but at least he showed a feeding response this evening. I still don't know what the F could have caused such a drastic change. I don't have a light on that tank right now...that's the only thing that has changed in the past 72 hours (it was a DIY LED that flinked out on Thursday). I wonder if the Midas went on a rampage.....??
I may never know.
The Anthias is fine. Though she is cautiously observing her new tankmate.
No word yet on a Divided (African Leopard) wrasse in anyone's stock list, but......I'm actually glad for now. Until I can get these QT's settled down, I don't want to even THINK about another addition.
Sometimes.......Fishes be crazy.

Peachy. So is this something I can expect in a 110g tank with tons of nooks, crannies, etc? Or was this born from the fact that the QT only had a couple pieces of faux coral? There seemed to be plenty of nooks and crannies in the coral, but....well......
Crazy that I NEVER saw any aggressive tendencies when I was in the room.

I thought the same thing about my lemon peel and starry blenny in regards to corals. I thought they were model citizens that did not bother anything because they didn't when I was around. Then, one day I added corals and BAM!!! The blenny was using the frag plugs to play basketball on my frag rack. I was kinda of impressed that he could relocate them from one end of the rack to the other. The lemon peel decided to devour a chalice in less than 5 minutes.
Also, the blenny chased my mandarin out of the tank.

While tearing my hair out at the QT tanks today, I also built the bench that was delivered on Friday:

The thing came with wicker baskets for the lower section, but I re-purposed them for linen baskets in the closet. They would have become cat hair magnets out here in the living room. As it happens, the empty spaces worked perfectly as book shelves. The three drawers are already getting filled with random aquarium crap. It's a pretty comfortable spot. Of course now even Michelle agrees that the IKEA chair is going to have to be replaced with the dark brown chair w/ black cushion.

Looking really good man. I agree with you about the chair. Very nice bench selection. :D
I would still like to do the custom bench in the future, but this way I can squeeze in some extra seating for the upcoming holidays, and I don't have to add to my already-overwhelming project list.
I may do a chair with a red seating cushion to bring some color into this room. It's very drab right now....lotta browns and tans. The wall is brushed with bronze, but it doesn't photograph well, at least on a cameraphone.

Hmm. Lights on this morning, and the McCosker's is still alive. Not active, but alive and breathing. My best guess is a 50/50 shot at this point, but I'm hopeful he'll pull through. The Anthias is still hiding on the other side of the LR, taking occasional peeks at his new sedentary tankmate.

Just caught up with the whole thread. Sorry about your wrasse and your tang... I do also think that it's blenny being stressed in a small environment.
Rick, when are we getting together for the chilli?? Let me know buddy :)

Can't catch a break. COme home today and the PBT is swimming around head up, tail down, looking stressed as sin. Test the water and I'm showing a heavy nitrite count (no ammonia, but heavy nitrite). Bear in mind that the trite yesterday was 0. WTF.
I'm mixing up a batch of 1.008 water right now. All I can do is a 5g batch. Sheesh.
On a brighter note, the wrasse is still alive, a little more active, and actually ate tonight. His fins still look like they've been through the shredder, but if he doesn't get infected he may pull through.
Richard, I'll check with Chel....we're out of town this weekend, but I think
we're staying in town next weekend. Holiday madness is in full swing!

Good news...I actually had enough saltwater to dilute down 10g of 1.008 water. So I managed to do a 50% WC, and added some Prime to the mix for emergency nitrite issues as well. I've been going nonstop since I got home tonight....time to sit the heck down and zen out. If the fish makes it through the night, I'll do another 50% WC tomorrow.
3 QT tanks is TOO MUCH. As soon as the blenny is done (Nov 17), I'm adding him and breaking that QT down.

Busy night. Besides a trip to the emergency room for a wife with shooting pains down her arm and numb fingers (pinched nerve, but you don't fool around with that sort of crap), and the usual nighttime meal prep, dishes, and ablutions, I also got the 20g tank broken down. I have to set it out on the porch for the night; hopefully I can sterilize it tomorrow night. I already picked up 20g of new saltwater, but that can age for a couple days while I do this. Had a brief ceremony around the porcelain bowl this evening also....I wasn't in the mood to do that this morning when I found the body.
SO........can I ask if anyone has any experience with sanitizing a tank after an ich outbreak? I was thinking a bleach solution, followed by multiple rinses and some time to air dry....but will the bleach kill the cysts? I should go post that in the disease forum....yeah, I'll do that.
The McCosker's is a little better this evening. Actually swimming, if just a little, went hunting for food and actually ate more than a morsel. He's still in rough shape, but as I said earlier....if I can prevent disease from all the fin damage, I think he's strong enough to pull through.

I hope your wife feels better. Sure it's not carpal tunnel? I'm showing signs of it in both of my arms. I guess from growing up on a computer as a kid. lol
Hate that you fish died... I know the feeling of not wanting to get rid of it this morning. I've often thought about preserving my losses in some formaldahyde solution in some mason jars. Then I think how creepy it would be and turn the idea down. lol
Sure, I have experience sanitizing. I break everything down, put the rock in a bucket with a powerhead and heater and clean the tank with some strong bleach, then vinegar (usually to clean the calcium deposits off) and let it air dry over night. Typically after all of that washing and drying I would say it is completely sterile. If you leave the rock sitting fallow for 72 days, it should also be ich free... or not just the rock but the decor/sand/whatever that you want to keep wet.
Glad that your other fish is pulling through.

Man Rick... I'm sorry to hear that.... my lemonpeel died as well.. :/ my flame went to town with him and killed him... very unfortunate part of this hobby....
You were doing everything textbook as well... stinks to hear this.. Glad to hear Michelle is doing well.

Thanks guys. Michelle is doing OK; it's definitely a pinched nerve under her scapula......not much she can do other than wait for the inflammation to go down, but her arm is in a sling. Which means I get to drive the Z4 around for a while, since she can't shift. I'm trying to put a sadface on about that, but..... ;-)
I emptied the tank last night and stuck it outside so it wouldn't stink up the house. Gonna clean it out tonight, then take it downstairs for a freshwater bath and bleach treatment. I'm out of town from Friday night to Tuesday morning for a family thing, but I should be able to have this back up and running after I return.
