Geez. I don't know what the heck happened while I was gone yesterday, but when I got home late last night I went straight to bed, didn't check the fishtanks.
I checked them this morning. Seems like my QT systems decided to go to hell in one glorious 24 hour period. My PBT has a fantastic coating of white spots again, even though the frelling tank is down to 1.008. She's also very pale and stressed looking. I checked the pH, which is in range at 8.0, and the amm and trite is all 0.
The 12g tank houses my McCosker's and Midas. Or rather, housed. I don't know what went on while we were gone yesterday, but I found my McCosker's on the sand bed, fins shredded, gasping for breath, and so pale he almost seemed like Casper the near-death McCosker. First thing I thought of was ammonia poisoning, until I noticed the Midas looking perfectly normal. I tested anyway. Ammonia WAS present, but barely above the 0 reading....certainly not enough to kill in 24 hours. I scooped up the wrasse and, not knowing what else to do, plunked him into the Anthias 10g tank. No acclimation, no floating in a bag, just scoop and plop. He really looked like he was minutes from the great toilet bowl anyway, so I didn't think this would make it worse.
The wrasse is still alive. Not moving much, but he IS getting some color back. He's making a slime coccoon right now for nighttime, but at least he showed a feeding response this evening. I still don't know what the F could have caused such a drastic change. I don't have a light on that tank right now...that's the only thing that has changed in the past 72 hours (it was a DIY LED that flinked out on Thursday). I wonder if the Midas went on a rampage.....??
I may never know.
The Anthias is fine. Though she is cautiously observing her new tankmate.
No word yet on a Divided (African Leopard) wrasse in anyone's stock list, but......I'm actually glad for now. Until I can get these QT's settled down, I don't want to even THINK about another addition.
Sometimes.......Fishes be crazy.
