Whew. We got back late last night from our little three-day mini-cation, and today has been a working day and a half. Sadly, we got back to a small tragedy. Seems the person who was watching our animals (and this is NOT her fault, but mine....) thought that the weather was so nice, she turned off our AC for the time we were gone. The house got up to 83 or so...which is hot, but not terribly so for the cats.
The tanks are another story. The Seahorse tank was at 77 with a chiller working overtime just to keep it THAT cool (It's supposed to be 73). I noticed some problems with the big tank right away; the corals were all kind of sad looking. That tank was at 86 degrees.
And the QT tanks, well.....they're smaller, and were in a small closed room. Two QT tanks, each of them were 90 degrees.
I lost the little sunburst Anthias at some point while we were gone. I'm sure the temp was too much for her. As it is, I'm absolutely amazed I didn't lose the McCoscker's or the Midas Blenny. Both of them looked stressed, but alive. I'm actually amazed I didn't lose the other fish. And equally glad (in a weird sort of way) that there was a piece of LR with bristleworms in the tank with the anthias. The bristles ate well this weekend. All that was left of the poor girl was the skeleton, but at least that kept the tank from any large ammonia spike.
I'm upset, but mainly at myself for not telling her to keep the AC on. She fed and took care of all the animals exactly like I had asked, and she had no way of knowing what that would do to the tanks. Non-fish people just don't think of that sort of thing. Spent part of the day cleaning tanks, now I need to sit back and chill a bit.
On the other hand, the main tank is looking pretty nice. I have some growth on my purple monti that I noticed today, and the little birdsnest that I thought was checking out has actually perked up since I moved it down a little!
