Actually it's not reef club. Its my whole sale collector friend who's taking us out to his zoa gardens. Only up to our lawfully collecting limits us to. :)
As reef club, we restore florida staghorns.

Haha thanks nova for the summary!
sorry for spilling the beans! Or do they say "don't spill the coconuts" here in SoFlo? Lol!
Btw, Mizner park was BEAUTIFUL! Loved it.

Quick summary:

  • Corals were purachsed.

  • Corals have grown.

  • Fish have been purchased and died in QT.

  • Evil QT was determined to have bacteria from cheap and old sand, and the whole thing was thrown out.

  • New QT was purchased.

  • Fish started living more.
    Corals grew some more.
Hilarious observations on South Florida life were made. Mostly by me.
People laughed. Mostly AT me for thinking I could provide SoFla comedy.
Sip and I made others jealous of our awesome reef club.
Sip, Nova, and Traveler made others jealous because we got to meet and have dinner down here.
That's about it.
LOL.
This is pretty accurate, and darn funny!!

Yeah. The tank is in a little of a holding pattern right now. I'm hoping a deal will come through soon for a few specific fish, and meanwhile I have a McCosker's in QT who is being stubborn about NOT getting better. I just got my Mag test in the mail (finally!!) so I can start working on raising the mag to deal with a couple algae issues.

Taking a little break right now from a 20% water change. I noticed a few things were starting to look "off" with a few corals, and then I remembered the incident with the skimmer cup overflowing.
Before I started sucking water, however, I took some macro shots. Hope you like them.

Maybe a little closer....

Same coral. little closer.

Thanks Krista!
I'm SUCH a tard. I realized another reason my tank was looking iffy. When I pulled the filter material out, it looked nasty. I was wondering why, until I remembered....the last time I did a water change, I thought, "I'll just change the filter floss tomorrow....."
Well, tomorrow NEVER HAPPENED. So this is something like month-old filter floss, and it was gross.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.....
Anyway. That's said and done. New filters are in, 20% of the water was changed, and the tank looks pretty good. Unfortunately I broke a couple branches off of my green bridsnest during cleaning, but I got two of them before the sank and re-fragged them. Hopefully they're big enough to grow out.
I have some more pictures post-cleaning. Some of these are actinic shots.
Here is that red pocilipora. It's growing...

My original Poci.

My new "Rainbow Pocillopora." I've had this for a couple weeks. Wife just noticed it yesterday. Some words were spoken about that.

A little closer.

Here, I could use some advice about this. I noticed this small patch of hair algae growing deep in the branches of the orange bird. Can anyone think of a way to get at this?? I'm at a loss...

Here's an overall shot of the orange birds.

>

That Aussie War coral looks amazing under actinics...

....as does the Favites...

...and the Acan.

The Pipe Organ looks like it's a lot happier in a warmer tank.

Finally, a closeup of the green bird under actinics.

Can you get some "dental instruments?" I believe they sell them at ace hardware. They are like 1.00 a piece. They are angled all weird and are good at getting at stuff.
What about also some SKINNNNYYYY needle nose pliers or some very long and skinny tweezers.
Try the drug store beauty aisle or some type of a specialty store like Sally's beauty supplies and try to find some specialty angled tweezers. They are like normals ones but instead of the end being straight, it shoots off the handles at like an obtuse angle...

something like these?

Pictures look great by the way!
The last picture in the first group of photos- the monti looking stuff with the yellow polyps. I bought a frag of that like a few weeks ago. What do you think of that stuff? Is it growing for you? I have mine in relatively high lights and pretty decent flow. It seems happy? What about you?

Rae, the coral you mentioned is called a yellow scroll coral, or a yellow pagoda coral. Tubinaria reniformis. It's related to the common green pagoda cup, but the polyps are much smaller and less "fleshy" than the green pagoda is. It's been my experience that the capture response is less pronounced as well, and it needs smaller food items.
Aquarium care for this photosynthetic coral is pretty simple. It needs "moderate flow, and moderate light," according to most websites. One thing to be aware of: there should be a good random flow across this coral so detritus can't settle in the ridges or cup of the coral. This will cause tissue degradation if schmutz is allowed to accumulate. I don't think they like a single continuous flow; some random movement is best. I also have mine about midway up the tank, roughly 10-11 inches under the water surface, and I use those lovely cheap Chinese LED fixtures as my lighting source. I tried placing it higher once, but it started bleaching so I put it back in the original spot.
These corals are often found in turbid water where they can get a lot of nutrients. Although they're photosynthetic, mine has responded well to feedings of small foods like cyclopeeze and freeze-dried zooplankton preparations. Mine has grown since I got it, but the growth is slower than genera like Montipora and Pocillopora. This might be because of my placement in the tank, or it might be a common trait for this particular coral....I don't know that answer.
Overall, I've really enjoyed this coral. It needs to be blown off every once in a while for hidden detritus, but the color is fantastic and it definitely has a great visual impact in the tank.

Rae, thanks. Yes, I do have a few like this, including some bent-tip designs, but they still don't reach. I'll have to search for some with a longer bent tip. That's a good idea, though. I wonder if I can find some with slightly wider rubber tips on the end to grab algae firmly....or if I could make that somehow.....hmmm......

I bet you could make it somehow.
There are those little replacement nubs that go on dishwasher racks. I think hardware stores and also sears sells them. What if you glue some of those on to some pliers/tweezers with long bent tips?

Hahaha thanks guys. I may not have to worry about this after all. I dropped my feeding cup tonight and don't ya know it hit the bird, taking maybe an eighth of the colony with it. on the plus side, I can probably reach that algae now. Sigh. Oh well....it will grow back.
Used my new mag test kit tonight. Got a reading of 1560. Much more realistic compared to the old kit. Going to up the mag slowly to get rid of these bryopsis patches.

Hahahaha no worries, I'm doing this deliberately. I've been slowly adding (VERY slowly since I didn't have the test kit) for the past few weeks. Google Kent M for Briopsis and you'll see.

Yeah, I've known about the Kent M method for a while. At least you have a kit now. Make sure you maintain it at 1600ppm for the next few weeks at all costs!
What camera are you using? What settings? I'm playing around with my Nikon D3200 DSLR and I'm having a hard time getting macro shots with my 18-55mm kit lens.
