I have a question. Why does it matter if the person who votes is along time member or a one time visitor? Does it make their opinion any less than any of yours? This is a hobby we all share- not just the regulars on the forums. Anybody who is in this hobby can share their opinion. That's what we want. Maybe they will stay in the forums because they felt welcomed to share their opinion.
Because the one time voters are not here for the hobby....they are "friends" of certain people that have been asked to make accounts and vote for them
I really wish they were new members....I would be the first to welcome them here....

I can understand that to a point. Then I want to believe that none of the contestants would be so shallow and cheat. People are here more to brag about their tank via photograph than they are to win $25.00. They want bragging rights. They can't have that in their own circle of friends because the friends would know he/she cheated.

how many workers do you have on staff? how about we submit the votes and SWF workers vote for their favorite.

OR even have the staff choose the top 3 pics each week and have the forum vote. This way there can be some friendly competition on the site and people can encourage new members to join.
OR
Instead of having a thread with the pics with the name of the person who posted it, how about having the pics PM'ed to an account? This way the people on the forum won't know who won or even posted a pic until the end.

How about we just submit our pictures, and we vote who we like w/o asking the neighborhood to create accounts to vote for you.....hmmmm....what a concept...honesty LOL

I encourage people at my work who work in the Pet Care department to join the forum. I think there is a lot of valuable info on here that applies to all fishkeeping and so they can know what I'm talking about when it comes to my tank. They also like the pics. I tell them to check out the contest and encourage them to vote (I HATE seeing polls with low votes), but they usually say they can't figure out how to vote.
Obviously, if you look at the last poll, they don't vote for me. I also don't bring up the contest. Does this make me a bad person when it comes to the photo contest?

There are 2 office employees and 6 fish room specialists.
I am not the person who runs this contest. LadyReekSeeker will be considering the proposal, to resolve this issue.

I applaud you for encouraging coworkers to further their knowledge here. If your motives are pure, the answer to your question is no.
I encourage many of the newbies that call for advice to join and participate in the message boards. Really now, my motive is to help educate.

I understand that you're trying to keep this a friendly and fun competition, but it has become anything but that lately.
The issues can be seen clearly in the Best of First Month Polls. It was blatantly obvious that someone was creating accounts, making one post saying "Good Job," or something similar and then voting. These people have yet to come back to the forum to participate in anyway, which further leads people to believe that the accounts were created to sway the voting.
Listen, I don't care whether I win or not, honestly I don't. I don't really purchase that much from this site since I have so many LFS's where I live, and I'd rather see the gift certificate go to someone that doesn't have a ton of LFS's near them and purchases from this site often, such as Meowzer for example.
When a newcomer that wants to participate in the competition sees how many issues there are, they're not going to want to be involved. It makes the entire site look like it's poorly run. I've seen it with other sites.
I agree that a newcomer should be able to post a picture, but there should be a minimum post count before someone can vote. If a newcomer that is legitimate in the contest wants to vote, they simply need to participate in the forums and hopefully reach their minimum post requirement before the week is up so that they can vote. I don't really think that this is a difficult concept and it would stop what the majority of the complaints are centering around. Even a miniumum post count of 25 isn't hard to reach for someone who actually wants to participate.
My suggestions would be (and I'm stealing these from other sites that run contests that work):
1) Anyone can post a picture unless they've already won during the month.
2) In order to vote you must have a minimum post count (I propose 25)
3) Polls should only include picture #'s, not who posted the picture
4) There should be no discussions in the poll thread, only voting.
Just some thoughts.
I'm sorry, but I can't stand dishonesty. This was supposed to be something fun that got people more involved and all it's done is create issues. I understand that it's new and there are kinks to work out, but they need to be fixed before it becomes even more of an issue.

SWFishy and I will have a weekly discussion and decide based on the elected winner, whether we think it was done unfairly, fraudulently or otherwise distastefully. I understand the main concern and I agree. This will be more supervised and if we think someone has won unfairly we will intervene. All posts in this thread will be considered greatly for future contests.

Sounds fair to me.
