HEY AL......I have a question.....her food intake is great ...water too....yellowing seems to be getting better (all good!)...BUT
WHY does she always pant????? The panting could be one or all three things: Corticosteroids can make people hyper/anxious; second general anxiety..she knows she is not quite herself causing anxiety and panting; third..with low red blood cell numbers she has lower whole body oxygen levels and her body tells her to force more oxygen in..so she pants. I suspect it is a combination of (mostly) the steroids and somewhat the lower than normal red blood cell count. AND also this sluggishness....How long could I expect her to be like this??? I would hope this will improve as her blood count improves. So, her normal HCT may be 35-40. She is probably about '20' at this point so she only has 'half' her normal energy level....admitably a little simplistic way to look at it but probably fairly acurate. I would suspect you will see this improve as her blood count does but i would prepare yourself for slow progression to normal will take 3-4 weeks.
I did take the water bowl out of my room.....and last night I put BOTH....YES BOTH dogs in the bathroom.....I know I said I would not put Rosie in there, BUT I felt more guilt leaving Pixie by Herself....They were ok...first they just looked at me thru the gate :( then they went to sleep...until 4 a.m. :( where they BOTH whined to go out.....let them out....put them back in the bathroom.....till 8 a.m......and they both went out again....that time I did not put them back in there.....AND NO PEEEEEEE YAYYY......SO I will do this for a few nights I guess, and as long as she doesn't do anything, then I guess I won't anymore......
The only thing is this week husband is on days too,......so the dog will be home alone all day.....SO I HOPE AND PRAY....she is good in the house all day....I block off my room and the hall to the other bedrooms, so she has the kitchen and the LR.....You may have an accident but you can only do the best you can till the steroid dose is reduced.

Thanks AL......I tend to spoil her
..when she goes out, if she walks too far from the porch she sits...so I go out and carry her back in :(
I am trying to not let her over exert herself any. Of course my husband doesn't do that

I know.....a long slow recovery....I just want to be sure the symptoms she is showing are not out of the ordinary
so thanks.....AGAIN....and AGAIN

You could bathe her in a yucca based shampoo...that would help with the fleas without taxing her system chemically.

Do you think Walmart carries something like that? Remember I am limited here :(

it is possible...but I would look at the rest of the ingfedients carefully as sometimes they mix chemicals into those shampoos for fleas and ticks as well qnd only use minimal yucca and more chemical.

I know I'm going to get flamed by people for my post so I figure I'll start off by flaming myself for saying this. You can use Ivory soap, however you must rinse it EXTREMELY well. This will help with fleas. You do not want to use it often. You can also use a tear less baby shampoo. A yucca shampoo would be best, but these are alternatives.

No flaming from me, I've used both. I actually only wash my dog in Johnson's Baby Shampoo.

I am gonna refrain and restrain myself from comment. You guys are pushing the scope however.....keep it up and you will show up in my signature.
A shampoo with lemongrass oil and yucca would actually be ideal.
If you absolutely must use dish soap I prefer dawn dish soap. It will coat the outer casing of the flea and for lack of desire to explain in detail, will suffocate some of them.......if your dog has dry skin and coat issues already though you are going exacerbate that problem. You can also place little dawn in some water and spray down your plants to treat for aphids and such.

Darth, I actually am curious to hear your thoughts since you own a grooming salon, yes? My vet and groomer (whom I do not particularly care for) said Johnson's was fine, but definitely open to other thoughts. You could PM me if you don't want to get the thread going in a different direction.

First reason...dogs lick themselves. Human shampoo tends to have a more acidic property to it. While your better dog shampoos are more nuetral. This could, while not likely, could lead to some internal issues if shampoo residue is left behind.
Dogs are different than humans..even their hair. For one...our hair is connected to the skin..their hair is connected to the muscle. This way they can raise and lower their hair to help cool or heat themselves........ever see the hair standup on a dog...this is due to the tensing of the muscle when adog is prepped for some action.
Their skin does not sweat either...thus panting. The greasiness you may feel is from the sebum produced in their sebacious glands in the skin. This sebum is how the protect and lubricate their skin and hair from the environment. Most human shampoos and dish detergents are designed to stip oils...as humanshate and have no need for these oils .....lol. constant use of these shampoos will remove this sebum totally and can put the gland into overdrive creating sebum. By stripping the sebum you open your pet up to acquiring pollentype allergies due to easier access to the skin and hair without the sebum protection. Quality dog shampoos will leave some sebum behind without totally removing it, thus leaving the pet their protection...it will not feel greasy after either. This is a big reason we are seeing allergies in our pets more and more......every seen a wolf at the zoo with an allergy?...how about coyotes, wild dogs....even cats tend to not have allergies on the level that dogs now a days do.
Moisture loss is another reason.....after you shower do you use lotion; after washing your hair...do you use conditioner to put moisture back in your hair? Dogs need the same thing.......as they also lose moisture through the bathing process...so conditioner is needed.
Now...all that said...baby shampoo is very gentle..vets will recommend diluting it (which makes no sense since the dog is soaking wet with water so the shampoo will dilute anyway). They are looking at it from a moisture retention standpoint and gentleness....but it still removes the sebum completely. Dish soaps do the same thing.
This is the basic gist of it without getting technical and boring.
