Smoking ban in public places

I think the point of the law is that it imposes on peoples personal health more than a stranger eating a cheeseburger, or having a beer, I dont think Gambeling is a problem like dui or secondhand smoke is.

The US did ban alcohol and it didn't work, and I don't think it'll work again.
To say that there should be a ban on fast food and drinking because it isn't healthy is just crazy. If I go to Burger King and eat a Whopper next to someone, they aren't taking in any of my calories. If I were to smoke right next to a person they'd be breathing in my smoke, and regardless of what year those stats were posted, second hand smoke is just as bad. Now will you be harmed if you're on the opposite end of the restaurant, probably not, but it's still disgusting, and I wouldn't want to eat with the smell and taste of smoke looming around.
We've had the ban is New York for a few years now. If you go into a place that was open before the ban, then go into another place that opened after there is a huge difference.

What we eat can affect those around us, especially as parents we need to teach our children how to eat properly. How many Americans are over weight and how many of these people will have kids that grow up to be over weight also? IMO, there is nothing more inexcusable then letting yourself go and becoming overweight/obese it's disgusting and shameful and I have little respect for these people and feel terrible for their kids who will likely be overweight or obese.
The fact that we have fastfood chains on every corner says a lot about Americans and in the long run is a lot more damaging then smoking and being exposed to second hand smoke in regards to health and the costs to american tax payers to care for these people.

Well depends on what you mean by public. In public buildings like court houses and what not, of course I support it. In private businesses like restaurants and bars I think it's an absurd overreach of the government's authority. Why should anyone but the proprietor decide whether or not people should be able to smoke in their establishment? If someone doesn't want to go to a restaurant that allows smoking, they are free to go elsewhere. This type of government interference makes me angry, and it sets a scary precedent that the will of the majority can replace private autonomy in situations where personal choice is harmless to others (I don't consider not being able to eat at Outback b/c of fears of secondhand smoke harm). We sure do have a lot of unethical, unnecessary laws for a country which considers itself to be the paradigm of freedom.

Continue your eating habits and you probably will not like the way you look when you get to your late 20's - early 30's. I do agree that places like su
ay are a good choice unless you drench your food in mayonese and cheese.

So all the others are bad??? How many veggies are you supposed to eat each day? What about fruit? (I dont like very many but i like tomatoes, green beans, corn, Mandarin oranges, pears, sometimes peaches, watermelon, and pineapple.) But idk most of the time I dont eat that type of stuff, which neither does my mom. And she still looks fine and shes getting umm old...hehe
So are veggies and stuff ok if there is sauce over them or is that defeating the nutritional value in them?

O and if you reply to that, we should stop since imo it is getting a little far from the original topic.

Of course eating fastfood is bad for you, but the smoking bans in buildings weren't enacted to prevent people who smoke from smoking, they've been enacted to that other people don't have to be in an unhealthy environment.
You can choose to smoke, drink, or eat McDonalds everday. The other people in the restaurant with you do not have a choice of whether or not they breathe smoke.

Contrary to popular belief the foods you eat do not lead to the formation of pimples/zits. There is no scientific evidence that proves that greasy foods cause outbreaks of pimples.

Here, Louisiana, no smoking is restruants, you can smoke in bars. I wish you couldn't smoke near doors, esp at the mall. I hated it at school. I'd have to walk the long way around the building to avoid the stupid people in the doorway outside. as if i'm going to walk through them smoking.

All you do is walk by really fast and hold your breath, and its not too bad. Its just when you have to sit somewhere and continously breathe it in, is where it gets annoying.

I think this thread misses the point. I am all for the ban. Yes a cheeseburger is bad for your health. The difference is... if you have a cheeseburger my cholesterol wont go up. The government can't make your health decisions for you. However, they should protect those that do make the right decisions. This doesn't hurt bars and restaurants. The ban has been in NY for years and most bars still find ways to accomodate their smoking customers. The ban isn't intended to encourage people to quit smoking. The goal is to protect those who choose not to smoke from those that do. There is no reason why a family should be afraid to go out to eat in fear that their young children will have to breathe your second hand smoke. If you are so against the ban... make a TV dinner.
