I'm not saying one way or another that they have poor quality tanks. I am disappointed in the way it is portrayed. I don't expect them to spend an hour showing gravel being washed. I do expect that they would show a bit of realism. They could include small amounts of information about what is involved in setting up a healthy, realistic tank. They could throw in a bit about the importance of cycling a tank, not over stocking it, and educating the owners of their tanks. They don't have to include a ton of information, just enough that people understand it is much more involved that dumping some salt in the water then throwing their fish in. They could give names of web sites or books for people interested in starting a tank and stress the importance of research before starting the hobby. For that matter the Animal Planet has their own extensive web site, why not post something responsible there?
I am not pinning it all on TV. There are uneducated people everywhere, but TV certainly fuels the fire. You can't deny that Finding Nemo certainly lead to the unnecessary demise of many marine fish. When we are talking about the care of animals, I absolutely do expect more from the Animal Planet than I do from Disney/Pixar!
I know we don't need a TV show to have people screwing up their tanks. However, I'm pretty confident that there will be many more uneducated people setting up tanks who would have never thought twice about it until they saw that show.
