That one looks cool Dan, thanks for the shot. That's a peppermint yes? Have you noticed if he chows out on the Aptasia? Or were you rid of it before the shrimp came along?

Yep, that's a peppermint. I don't/didn't have any Aptasia on my live rock, but have read that the Peppermints get rid of it/eat it.

With just 10 hermits in the tank, might get just a few more too...it woul take those 10 quite a while to sift through all that sand and algae on the LR.

well woody,
sounds like you are making a lot of progress, i am getting the water ready for my first water change tomorrow and then wed i will be getting the first residents for my tank, i think i am going with some scarlet hermits, a few more snails, a peppermint shrimp or two, a fire shrimp, and a cleaner shrimp and then maybe next week go ahead and add the golden headed goby or the diamond back not sure which one yet and then let them work on the tank for a while and then maybe later on the perculas and the hippo tang. i am getting excited just thinking about it. hope everything goes well and i am looking forward to seeing a few more pics of your new residents. talk to you later, mike.

Good afternoon all!! We're gack from LFS shopping. Came home with two peppermint shrimp, and one beautiful fire shrimp.
Acclimating them now, and will have them in the tank in a couple hours.
Oh got some cool looking plants too, but can't remember what the LFS girl called them...I'll get a shot of them after I get them on the LR and stable.
This is SO cool!!
The crabs and snails are doing just splendid.

Well? It was bound to happen sometime...things were just going too well.
We brought home the Fire Shrimp and the two peppermint shrimp, got them acclimated, got them in the tank...watched them meander around for awhile, then about an hour later the fire shrimp was gone.
I'm guessing he just didn't take the stress of the changes too well. He was acclimated the same as the peppermint, and both peppermint are doing very well.
So I'm sad to report of our first SWA casualty...and he was pretty too.
The LFS owner told me she'd give me a super deal on the next fire shrimp they got in...hope so cause that was $35.

hey woody,
long time no speak i know, but work work work. i took off too long and now i have a mess to clean up, but anyway enough about the job. i have been tryin to catch up on the site, but man there are a lot of new threads. sorry to hear about your fire shrimp, i know the misses was looking forward to getting him. maybe you will have better luck with the next one. i haven't added anything else other than the tag a longs to my tank yet, but i am going to the lps on either wed or thur to pick up my first residents. i am thinking of going with just a cleaning crew first and then maybe in a couple of weeks adding fish. all of my parameters are great i did my first water change yesterday and well everything went ok i guess, but man i didn't like having to start that overflow back up. the saltwater tastes nasty. i cleaned all of my sponges and got everything cleaned up as best i could for my first residents. i am happy to report that my hermit crab, all four snails, and the scallop are doing great, no casualties yet. i can't believe the scallop survived the last part of the cycle, i guess i was lucky that he came on the last round of lr instead of the first round. i ordered my lights yesterday and i should have them in a couple of weeks. i went with the coralife 48" 260 watt (2) 65 watt daylights, (2) blue actinics, and four lunars pc. i am hoping this will be ok for what i am trying to do. well, as usual i have typed too much so i will have to hollar at you later. i will post a pic of my first residents later on this week. hope everything goes well for you from here on out.
later,
mike

Mike, with those lights you'll be able to keep Soft and some LPS Corals. That unit is similar to my Orbit light fixture, you'll love the dawn to dusk effect and the lunar lights.

I put their bag in the tank for about thirty minutes, then put them in the bucket and dripped them for about an hour and a half. I took him back to the LFS and the girl said the fire shrimp sometimes have diffuculty getting over the shock, but she did say that she'd give a me a great deal on another one if we wanted to try it again, when they got new stock in.
We'll see.
But the other two shrimp are doing just fine...they're wandering all over the tank, rocks, checking out their new homes.

Speaking of lights...are the lunar lights supposed to stay on 24/7? We haven't gotten timers yet, but we're turning the lights on manually every day so far...but the lunar light doesn't have a switch to it.
I imagine when I get the timers setup, the lunar light will go off during the day, yes?

Ok, sounds good. I'll try and get some crab and shrimp pictures this evening.
had one crab has already moved into a new shell. We put some shells I got from Okinawa in the tank Saturday, and one little guy moved in not long after we put them in there.

I'm assuming that these little white "things", are copepods or whatever some of the posters have been talking about that come out of either the rock or the sand...just didn't expect to see as many of them at one time...

Well my pods are really growing, or should I say multiplying like crazy...there must be thousands on the glass itself. No telling how many are in the rock and sand.
So I have a bunch of algae growing on the rock and the intake of the filter, some of the glass.....is that good algae? Or bad algae??

What color is it? If it's red, it's Cyanobactria which is bad. If it's brown then it's dead diatoms, which will go away as long as your not using tap water. If it's green then it's the good stuff for your cleaner crew to get rid of. If you have a bunch then check your phosphates, High Phosphate and nitrates can cause large algea blooms.........
