hm I know for a fish only tank some basic lights are good enough, but what if I decide to do some corals, then I would have to buy MH lights on top of the basic light I got first. so that is 2x the cost. dillema dillema
Nick.

From what I've read and learned through here and a few other places with articles and suggestions, the lighting that I have can accomodate many corals and anemones. I'm not sure about those that require the brightest bright of lights, but from what I've read I'll have quite a selection to choose from when the times comes.

Bowled in a tournament this morning, and we were close to another LFS in Bryant, so the Mrs wanted to stop in and take a peek. This place had a very nice selection of fish, corals, anemones, cleaners, rock wasn't too bad either.
The Mrs. wanted to try another Fire Shrimp, and the price was decent ($18.95), so we got a Fire Shrimp, Skunk cleaner, and an emerald Crab to help with the hair algae.
Acclimating them now...going to do that for upwards to an hour...want these to make it.

I acclimate fish and inverts no less then 4 hours. For 3 hours I add 1/4 cup every 15 minutes then for the last hour I up it to 1/2 cup every 15 minutes.... may be over kill, but haven't had an acclimation accident yet....

AHA...so maybe I've been too quick about it??
So Dan? When you're acclimating....do you have anything running in the buckets? A powerhead? A filter? etc?
or just keep adding the water?
I'm going to go with your recommendation...pull back to adding water every fifteen minutes, and draw it out some more...THANKS!!!

btw...Dan? Do you happen to use Yahoo or MSN messenger?
If you do, and don't mind real time questions, email or PM me the user name?
Also if any others on here use Yahoo or MSN,
I'm Woodyblueeyes for both services!

I pop the bags in the aquarium then wait 15 minutes for the temperature to adjust then start adding the water. No I don't use MSN or Yahoo, but I do have an AIM name though....

Oh, well in that case, let me get it up and running.

Dan, quick question.
When you're acclimating..you keep the bag with the fish/invert IN the tank right? And just add water to that yes??
I want to make sure I'm doing this right because my cleaner just went belly up on me.....
Luckily the LFS is going to swap him out for me.
Current tank readings.
Salinity 1.025
PH 8.0
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 0
Temp 78 degrees

Yes, that's what I do.......... You Water Levels look Good. At least the LFS is swapping him out for you. That's unusual that it would kick while it's still in the bag:eek:

Well got to the LFS and the girl was just overly apologetic. She said she had such a rough time getting the skunk out that she was worried, but couldn't call cause she didn't have our number.
She replaced the skunk, and gave me five astra? snails...they are really cool looking with black and white shells.....
SO they're in the bag, in the tank, and adding tads of water every fifteen minutes.
This skunk has some personality...I can already see that.

Ok quick update...
The Fire Shrimp (Tusk) is doing really well!!
The new Cleaner (Hoover) is still acclimating, but he's really trying to get out of the bag..hehe.
Got 5 new Arista snails...they're cool looking, and doing very well too.
Pulled a few sprigs of algae out of the tank while I was doing some other things...might take some time tomorrow and pull some more.
Oh, Emeril (The emerald crab), has gone into hiding, but he was chomping away at some of the algae when I first put him in too.
Now we're going to relax and watch "Shark Tale"....
be back in a while

Being a newbie (just added first piece of LR today), I REALLY REALLY LOVE this thread. It has clarified so many things for me. :cheer: I know a lot more than I did before. I have to get a test for the amonia, nitrates, nitrites, and phosphates yet, but being that I did just add the LR, I have a little time. I have a VERY tiny 2.5 gal setup right now, I need to find a mini-compact light for my hood too. I have black colored marine sand as the substrate.
As for the tests, they make tests that test that stuff in one shot, right? I think I saw something like that on a SW site somewhere for sale. My Ph is 8.2 and my salinity is at 31 and my SG is 1.023.
To help kick off cycling, I know about the shrimp thingy, but what about the commercial bacteria liquid that I heard about? Being that I have such a small setup for now, what do you think?
My LR is really pretty...Looks like a piece of old coral, with pretty pinks and greens. I have a picture, but the flash went off and there is a big glare. I'll try to get another in a few days, when something may be growing or popping out. I cannot wait to see what happens! I do need to get a few smaller pieces of LR. I think. The piece I have is only about 1.5lbs, do you think that is enough for a 2.5 gal tank?
Another question...the filter i have is a whisper brand, came with the tank. I was told and have read that they are ok to use. What's the real deal? :nervous: This one I know makes a great current, and I really don't think that I would need a powerhead with it, especially since I know that I will be changing the water A LOT.
That raises YET another question. Sorry this is so out of whack and not very well thought out but it's late and I am extremely thristy for the knowledge that is "Finding Nemo" and "SharkTale" (our 2 y/o daughter got them for her birthday on the 8th, which is one reason we want to give a SWA a shot...She LOVES Nemo)...Being such a small tank, would the cycling be done faster? or still about the same time, since the ratio of LR to tank size is equal, in theory? :notsure:
Fake plants: (ANYONE HERE) good idea, bad idea? When put them in if ok? Thoughts? Ideas??
I think this will be all I ask for now. I am sure I will have more ?'s down the line here, so....off to bed I go...it is 2am...:D
Woody, you wouldn't mind me adding you to my Yahoo and AIM messengers? my ID is migraine_fly69 on yahoo and BewtyFull Gurl on AIM...it would help me out :)
PLEASE ask any questions about my setup if you need clarification, so I can get this going the best I can.:)
I love this thread!:joy: (sorry so much 2 read....can't wait for this journey...haven't been this excited over something since my daughter was born!!)
