Ok, I need to know what to feed my lawnmower blenny?? He's eaten most of the algae in the tank, so I'm going to start feeding him.
Should I feed him by hand? Or make something and just drop in the tank and he'll find it??
Little help here!!!

I know they make Algae Sheets that you can break off part of a sheet and place it in your tank with a clip. Although I bought seaweed sheets for my fish and tried romain lettuce too and the fish just ignored both. But it's worth a shot....

I'm a volunteer diver at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA, and we feed our vegetarians pieces of nori (the same seaweed sheets used in sushi), as well as romaine and even occasional broccoli!

hey woody,
long time no see. i have been a busy bee here the last couple of weeks and from the looks of the thread you have too. i haven't signed onto the computer so long that i really got behind. i tried to catch up, but have to get ready for work now and i just made it to page 10. i will try and read up some more tonight and catch myself up. btw i have to report my first swa casualty. i got a diamond back goby last week as my first resident and well he only made it two days. the first night he jumped into the overflow and lived, i put him back in the tank and well the second night that little sucker found the little 4 in space that i have cut out for my return water. well, he ended up on the carpet and didn't make it. i have added a few snails and a couple of hermits to the tank and they are all doing great. i also added a sally lightfoot crab and she is doing great. all of my parameters are still good. i cant seem to get the trates down below 15 so i am going to do a 30% water change this next week instead of a 10% to see if i can get them any lower. i have also decided that i am going to set up a qt tank before i add any fish to my tank. i haven't had a casualty do to ick and i don't want to start now. i am going to get the qt tank first and then the fish. i am going to continue to add more lr, snails, shrimp, and crabs though. hope everything is going well with your setup and i am going to try and catch up tonight so i can comment a little more on your progress. just wanted to say hi since it has been a while. i will post a pic of my aquarium tomorrow for you to check out. later and happy hobbying.

Two unidentified critters. Is this one, perhaps, a juvenile aiptasia?

If you happen to find out what that is, let me know, because all of a sudden I have that growing in several places on my LR.

I still don't know what it is, but I did see something that appears to be the same thing on another Web site with a note that it's harmless.

Yes Mike, the plants did come already on the LR. There are three "sprigs" of plantings in all....guess they were an added bonus!!

From what I can make out in the pics the "plants" might be Halimeda, can u get a closeup pic of it??? Tank looks good!!!!!:)

OK, so the Mrs. wanted to go to our local LFS and look around...so we're there, and we see a couple things that look cool, are easy to keep (according to the LFS girl, whom we've come to trust) and they're not that expensive.
So we buy a very (VERY) small pink zenia for $8, and two small mushroom pieces for $8.
Get home, acclimate, a few hours later I take the zenia out of the bag and put it on a rock...a couple minutes and it's floating in the breeze (ok, current, but anyway)....get the shrooms placed, they seem to be doing ok.
The zenia I put lower in the tank, and it looks like it's ok, not being pushed around...when it pops loose, and goes under a piece of rock...well I pull the rock up, can't find it....look a few other places, still can't find it. Did my fire shrimp eat it? I don't know....
but somewhere underneath my LR, there is a small (bout the size of a q-tip top) piece of zenia hanging out somewhere......
There is my $8 lesson for the day. DO NOT BUY super small pieces of coral. Unless someone wants to give me the cure all for placing them???

Hey Woody not trying to butt into your thread here, but I just keep reading on... Are you saying your bought Xenia (pink)??? How long has the tank been setup??? I think your lfs should have advised that it isn't a super easy coral, some have luck with it and some don't... I do know that is should be kept in a mature stable aquarium... They aren't in the same ease of care as mushrooms or leathers.....

hey woody,
well i guess i am not the only one that is busy. haven't heard from you in a while, but i do have a little update on my tank. i added 2 peppermint shrimp to my tank the day after i posted last and they are doing great. they come right up to the front of the tank and show off. i also came home a couple of days ago to a little surprise. my birthday was last week and well mom had stopped by and dropped a couple of surprises into my tank. well, my brother actually put them in the tank, because he has been here everytime that i add something new so he knows how to acclimate them now. but anyway she got me a fire shrimp, an emerald crab, and about 5 more hermits. i was pleasantly surprised. i think she wasn't expecting me to notice them since i get home late from work and usually come in and turn the light off on the aquarium, but of course i still have newby fever and watch my tank for at least 1 hr everynight just to see how everybody is doing. and well was i surprised to see my new guests. they seem to be doing very well. the fire shrimp isn't as bold as the peppermints he has been staying in one of the rock caves i built. and well the emerald crab has been some of everywhere, he is still tryin to find his spot in the rocks. but all in all everything is doing well and i hope your having the same luck.
later,
mike

Wow, Mike, it sounds like your tank is really coming along! Mine is still cycling -- nitrates down to 10, so I hope to get started on adding a cleanup crew soon. My husband keeps kidding me about my new hobby of "watching rocks," and I guess it does sound weird to the unitiated. It's amazing how many critters are emerging!
Woody, did you get your clown yet??? Inquiring minds want to know...

hey diving,
nice to meet you. i hope you are enjoying your new tank. i have enjoyed every minute of mine. i am glad i finally went ahead and done it. the cycling is a long process, but if you are like me it gave me a lot of time to research my tank, what i needed, didn't need, what i wanted and what i didn't want. this website is a great source of information. me and woody started our tanks just a few days apart and we have followed each others progress and learned from each others questions and of course mistakes. it has been a crazy experience for both of us as well as a few others that we have met along the way. i am going to take a few pics of my tank tomorrow to show my progress and a few of my critters. i hope you enjoy your tank and get everything out of it that i am. this is a costly hobby, but i think it is well worth the money. btw woody did you ever find out what those white circular worms that look like white poka dots on our tanks was. i think it is pods, but they don't seem to move and i scraped a few off of my tank and they don't seem to be alive. maybe it is the outer shell of them after they hatch away. not sure but if anybody else reads this and knows what we are talking about please chime in.
later all and happy hobbying:
mike

btw diving,
your nitrates aren't very high. below 20 is ok. for fish anyway. you should try cleaning all of your sponges and do a 30% water change though if you want and that should bring it down. also you can get a bag of phos out and put it in direct water flow and that should also help. just a little something that i learned with my tank.
good luck,
mike

Nice to "meet" you, Mike! Thanks for the tip -- I'll definitely do all that later this week. My plan is to add snails, hermit crabs, and maybe a couple of shrimp first. Eventually, I want corals, but I'll undoubtedly get a fis first. It's a very small nano (12 gallons), so I know I need to be careful.
