    Mini Nano Tanks???

look around under 'pico reef' and if you really want small 'femto reef'. the smallest viable reef i've seen was around 0.3-gal.

    Dinoflagellates V.S. Diatoms

the bubbles or elevated-ness is from oxygen production. they are photosynthetic and often create a "pearling-effect" from the bubbles. picture some snotty pearls.

    toadstools

usually, that's ok. i have them clustered around each other (different species). would they grow better/faster without the different types around them? maybe. but that's species domination that you see in the wild. i find more trouble in possible shading from one out-growing the other...

    Dinoflagellates V.S. Diatoms

letting dinos "run its course" is basically crashing the tank. it will smother everything unless you bring it under control. the quickest (imo most effective) method is direct vacuuming out of the dinos. you can use an air tube and siphon it all out little by little. i've seen some snails eat...

    sump baffle question

i agree with jamie, the walls will bulge out. depending on the model container it will bulge out a little or a lot. i use one (rubbermaid) right now in fact, and brace one side against the wall. (offset sump) it bulges a bit but doesn't seem like it'll burst (i hope, it's been in place for...

    a little lighting info please

well, it was "for example" (e.g.) only but you can do another photoperiod other than natural daylight. as long as the real sun's photoperiod isn't visible (e.g. window or door) it shouldn't bother the livestock, i.e. confuse their bio-clocks. for instance, i run my tank in my basement cut off...

    a little lighting info please

each switch should be linked to a separate plug. each plug should then be connected to separate timers (hardware store light timers are fine). keep the switches on the "on" position always and let the timers switch them on/off, just like a typical room lamp. the typical sequence is to set...

    Leather question..

if it's rotting (i.e. crumbling) i cut. cut it slightly more than the affected area if you do cut. but try siphoning the crud out first. you may need to scrape the area and siphon. just like us, corals can get infections. sometimes they move fast and sometimes the infections move slow...

    Nano Build-Off question.

actually, for the mag pump you can use a ball valve (as long as it's on the output side). it's just a matter of/similar to increasing head pressure until you get the desired result.

hmm, actually your alk is ok. i thought it was 14.0 dkh. i often read faster than my brain can digest. :notsure:

    Got a few ?'s.

waterchanges would lower the calcium concentration. you're replacing x-volume of sw that's at a higher calcium concentration with x-volume of freshly mixed sw at a lower concentration. it's the whole basis of pollution control thru dilution. altho i agree with anna that 800 is hella high for...

    MH bulb replacement

can you raise the fixture (i.e. tying up the pendant or spacers under the sides of the fixture). raising the distance between the light and the tank and gradually reducing over time gives the same effect as bang suggested. multiple sheets of eggcrate also can accomplish the same/similar.

    Nano Build-Off question.

i'd suggest you choke off the flow with two things: swcd and a ball valve. the swcd should eat 1/4~1/3 of the volume ime. the ball valve is "just in case", put this right after the mag output. you could also swap out impellers but that doesn't always fit mag to mag. just drill the holes but i...

LFS a Liar Or What ***PLEASE REPLY***

i believe those 12W'ers are Normal Outputs (hagens?). like rubber suggests, maybe if you upgraded to PC's or VHO's you could do it. it's not easy but it's possible. i'd set your sights lower then upgrade as you go. maybe 70W or 150W mh as your next upgrade. then you could have the clams and...

    Aqua C Remora Mod???

i've modded both my remora pro's to have longer tubes, 4" and 10" extensions. both run in sumps so the surface concentration of proteins is resolved by that. both run fine even with the longer tubing but i run mag-3 upgrades on both, they're both pro's versus regular, and i'm judging...
