i couldt turn down a gift

With your lighting you could try a squamosa clam in the mid to upper levels. I wouldn't test the limits of keeping any kind of other clam IMO. Good luck

    Any one done this?

Are you using RO/DI water? Have you tested the water before you put it in the tank, just to make sure there's no nitrates present in your water source? Good luck

    Hardware?

If you can afford it I would get something other than the berlin air lift. They're just not as efficient as a venturi for skimming. Good luck.

    Emerald crabs(colors)

Is the crab bright red or more of a dull reddish brown. The reason I ask is strawberry crabs usually cost more than emeralds. If it's more of the dull redish brown it is probably Mithraculus forceps, which is very similar to the emerald. They might get a little bigger and some of the ones I've...

    any info on engineer gobies?

Be sure your rock structure is solid, they will burrow under them making them unstable. They are not aggressive and are carnivores. Good luck

lights or no lights.....that is the question

No, it's not going to kill everything if you leave the lights off. I prefer to leave the lights off when cycling a new tank. It helps keep algea growth under control. I do run the light a little when I'm looking in the tank for new stuff like worms and other critters. Good luck

    Answer this about Metal Halide

Halides penetrate the water the best, and most people like the shimmer effect they produce.

    AquaFuge Hang-On Refugium

You already have a twenty gallon tank below your display for a quarantine tank. Why not use that as a refugium? Unless you have used copper in the tank that is what I would personally do. You can set up another quarantine tank for like $20. Good luck.

    help with crab id

Is it brown? If so it might be a close relative of the emerald crab, Mithraculus forceps. Very similar in demeaner to the emerald as well. They don't usually bother any corals, but might grab a fish when it gets a chance. Good luck.

    mandarin question

I can't think of anything in a reef tank that would bother a mandarin. I wouldn't keep it with an anemone they're not strong swimmers. Good luck

    New lights

It's not going to hurt anything to have all the light come on at once. If you want to have the lights come on at different times you will most likely need two ballasts. I have seen PFO VHO ballasts with two switches on them to control the light cycle. Good luck.

    emerald eating FD?

I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it seems to be bothering the feather duster. I've personally had good experiences with emeralds. Mine just liked to steal food from my anemone. Good Luck.

Tales from the LFS: Part 1

Just yesterday we had someone call us to see what was the best way to get rid of aptasia. So I went through the different methods. Then I asked him if it was on the rock the glass or both. He told me it was all over the back glass, but that he had gotten it off of the rock. His method of getting...

    Fish Choices---are they good ones?

If you plan on getting a cleaner shrimp, scratch the spotted hawk. It will make a quick meal of it. The dottyback will probably be fine if you make it the last addition, even then it will probably be aggressive. The others are fine reef additions. Good luck.

    Looking for Red, White, Blue

This is a pic from the store I work at on the weekends. It's colors are red, pink, white and bluegreen.

Can someone ID these for me??

The red thing is most definitely a tunicate with aptasia being the anemone looking thing. I second the turkey wing clam idea. The last thing looks to me to be an encrusting tunicate, but if it is crumbling it might not be living. How old is the tank? Is some of the rock new? Good luck.:)

    Degrading coral tongue.....

How long have you had it? What are your waters levels? What kind of shrimp were picking at it? Are there any corals near it that could have stung it? Answer these questions and that will be a start to finding the problem. Good luck.

    what is this??

It looks like it could be a small rock anemone of some type. It almost looks like a bleached Mojano anemone, although I've never seen one bleached I would imagine it can happen. Good luck.

Whats the most important thing to keep a Reef?

Running your skimmer during the cycle will not hurt anything. I don't know if it will make the cycle go any quicker, but it won't slow it down. Good luck.

    Couple Clam Shots.....

Oh yeah, I also really like that Crocea. It has very nice color. Do you have any pics of it from the top down? My maxima looks even better to me from the top. Good luck.
