what is a filter used for????

The canister does exactly the same in saltwater as in fresh; however, some the smaller organisms that it would remove in a saltwater tank are food for filter feeders. There normally are no filter feeders in freshwater tanks so the filter acts in its stead. After all nature abhors a vacuum...

    Telemarketers!!!!!!

Anytime one calls, after telling them not to call and to remove your number from their lists, threaten to file a complaint with the FCC for harassment. Given the amount of the fine they would receive they normally don't call again.

    Household goods?

I don't know how economic this may be but it may be worth a figuring. Add tincture of iodine to hydrogen peroxide. Iodine crystals will precipitate. I suppose these could be used as a supplement; just dissolve them in water before adding.

    Do I need a top-off unit anymore?

Instead of doubling your work load by dripping for top-offs and kalk, why not just drip a more dilute kalk solution sufficient to meet both calcium demand and top-off. Just an idea to lighten the load.
