    sunburnt sps

Randy Holmes Farley's take on aluminum oxide and ferric oxide http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-09/rhf/index.php#16. He does mention some very minor side effects of GFO like possible increased calcification on or near the GFO, but he does state the following: The bottom line: Would I use GFO to...

    sunburnt sps

I believe aluminum-oxide was one of the types of products that I've read could release absorbed phosphates back into your system under certain conditions. That's why I specifically recommend iron oxide based products like GFO or chemipure elite. What do you consider "Chemicals"? I would guess...

    wanted alveopora got alveopora

Very nice. I really like Alveopora. I currently have two of them in my tank. Just be careful with it. They are very delicate. I had one that thrived and grew for almost a year. Then something knocked it off of it's perch and it fell to the sand. It bleached and slowly died after that. One...

    Is This Coral Dying??

I would do a large water change (around 30%) to get the nitrates and phosphates down. I would also use some GFO to lower those phosphates. Either a bag of Chemipure elite or Phosban. Phosban works best with a reactor, but it does come with a mesh bag. You can just dumps some of it into the...

Turf Scrubber or Protein Skimmer. Which is more beneficial to the aquarium.

I would say that a good skimmer does a better job of nitrate removal (or prevention), but removes very little phosphates, doesn't encourage pod population growth and generally smells worse when cleaning. The skimmer is a very effective uni-tasker and the turf scrubber (or macro's) has a broader...

    What to do?

Better then the way I did it. I walked into a LFS, handed them my credit card and told them to sell me everything I needed for a saltwater tank. Half of the stuff that they sold me is sitting on a shelf in my garage. For me the project of setting up a tank was a distraction to help me quit...

Oh. I picked up this Baby-o-pora frag about a month ago. I got a really good deal on it at my wife's uterus.

Picked these two up last week. Purple Stylo with and without the flash. My Photography skills are lacking. Red Acans: I haven't decided on final placement for the Acans. My Duncans are recovering nicely from their mauling. Coming out a little more each day.

    Some sort of bivalve?

I tried to take a better picture of it, but my camera is 10 years and my photography skills are limited. It is very very tiny. I guess I should just nuke it with some Joe's Juice to be on the safe side.

    Under the hood

That's cool. I thought about plumbing through the wall behind my tank into the garage, but was worried about temperature swings. It gets really hot in my garage. I would think a shed would be even worse.

Need some hlep with Kalk dosing

If it makes you feel any better, my tank survived a massive kalk overdose. Someone at my LFS talked me into buying a cheap kalk reactor and sold me some concentrated kalk slurry to go with it. Needless to say, the guy gave me some bad advice and it started "snowing" in my tank as soon as I...

Need some hlep with Kalk dosing

On a side note, many people believe that dripping kalk also reduces phosphates in your tank. Just another possible added bonus of dripping kalk.

Any LPS or soft coral reccomendations for a shaded area?

My Duncan's have always been in medium-high light and have grown like crazy. They definitely don't like a lot of flow, but can handle moderately intense light.
