    Nathan... Your fish may have died due to osmotic shock...if you didn't acclimate them properly, even though they are tough..they are not that tough... I doubt an amonia spike killed them...with damsels...that doesnt happen too often.

    Cyanobacteria is present in all walks and forms of life...it is one of the oldest living organism on Earth...it is present everywhere..water and land alike...the moss on trees, the slime in the oceans...everywhere... So it could very well be.

    You may aireate the containers with the livestock...may help keeping the ph somewhat intact along with providing some circulation for the critters.

    Bob...hehehe Harley... Hair algae is an opportunistic algae...when it is starved of the needed nutrients...it dies...and decays creating more nutrients to grow again... You have to break that cycle in your tank with multiple water changes using RO/DI water, and a cleanup crew (snails) to consume...

    Be smart..buy a life sized poster of someones reef tank...frame it, and stick it on the wall...much cheaper and entirely less frustrating....and it never needs water changes and algae wont be an issue..ever!
